I am helping to replace the rear spindles on a 4106. We plan to cut (tourch) the old ones out while the new ones are cooling in dry-ice.

Any one ever done this?

Joe -

Before you do this, I suggest you call Luke at US Coach (1-888-262-2434) and find out how to do it RIGHT, so it doesn't get screwed up!

Hi Joe:
You don't mention why you are replacing the rear axle tubes?????
If they must be changed, you might check in your Yellow Pages under Axle Repair.
We have a company out here (N.J.) that comes in, cuts off the tubes, bevels the stubs and welds on a beveled replacement tube END with the proper threads and sized for the wheel bearings.
I only mention this because his company is not unique but rather he & other companies all over the country have access to these replacement ends nationally.
The first time I heard of it was about 20 years ago when a customer told me about it. I had my doubts, had the guy come in & do the repair and that bus parked on our lot & operated many miles per day in charter service.
It made a believer out of me & we have had him make the same repair on many buses and never had a come-back.
In my 40 years in the business, I never tried nor have I seen the tubes replaced as you described which is probably in Da Book.
I don't know the possible pitfalls and only offer the above as a KNOWN SUCCESSFUL repair for the job you want to do.
I Hope this HELPS!!!!
And most importantly. HAPPY BUSSIN!!!!

That helps alot! We pulled the rear wheels cause of leaking seals. Found the RH tube had pretty big steps worn in it and the other side a little too. Already have the replacement the tubes but they can be returned. Luke's way sounds alot better. Thanks, Joe
