Approximately 1 HP = .75 KW (less losses) - HTH |

General rule of thumb for small generators 2 HP of engine for every 1 Kw of generator example 10HP engine for a 5kw generator (Message edited by pete RTS/daytona on August 21, 2008) |

Doug, be careful of basing the alternator size based on the diesel engine manufacturers data. This data is in many cases based on a stripped engine with no muffler, no alternator and maybe no water pump or other accessories. I would feel safe using it for a 5kw alternator and probably with a 6.5kw head. Richard |

Make sure you look at the horsepower curve of the engine since many are rated at a much higher rpm than the normal 1800rpm of a heavy duty brushless alternator. And that rating should be for continuous output. So if you have a 12kw, look for a 20-24hp continuous rated engine at 1800rpm. Good Luck, TomC |
