Is anyone towing an enclosed trailer with their bus ? If so how long is the tongue and do you use a weight distributing hitch setup ? Thanks Tom |

Hello Tom you should not need a weight distributing hitch with you MC5, As they are more for smaller vehicles so you don't go down the road looking like a banana, But check with your local D.O.T. about over all length allowed you may need an over length permit. Dave, Thanks for the response. The trailer I'm looking to tow is a 20' Interstate. It's rated at 7000 lbs, has tandem axles, with electric brakes, and standard tongue length. I've done some checking here in Oregon and from what I've found the overal length limitation for Recreational vehicles is 45'(single) and 65' with tow. I've met other BusNuts in my travels that tow light trailers (less than 8000) and would very much appreciate any advice about the subject. Thanks Tom |

Hi Tom, Just saw this post. I tow a 35 foot trailer behind our scenicruiser, see picture. The max legal length in most states is 65 feet combined. I have a 5th wheel mounted where the normal hitch would be to qualify as a stinger steered configuration which is legal to 75 feet in most states with a 4 foot overhang at each end. My total length is 77 feet and I have a letter approving this configuration from the Ohio DMV for the times I get stopped out of state. There are some states, that regardless of configuration will not allow anything over 65 feet, but the ones I know of are along the west coast, so far away from our normal driving patterns. My trailer weighs 14,000lbs loaded, and we have done a lot of work to strengthen the back of the old Scenicruiser to accept the load. I do also use weight distribution bars, just because I feel they help spread the load between the traler and tow vehicle. I made the hitch, so let me know if you would like pictures, or more info. There were a number of posts on trailer towing on this site last year that may give you some more information.
