I have a 1976 MCI 5B with a Solar aray on the roof, 2500watt Trace inverter, and 6-2 volt batteries to run the house. These batteries are charged by the solar, or from the local power supply. No Genset. THE QUESTION. has anybody any experience with using the 24 volt alternator on the coach to convert to charge the 12 volt system. I have a converter in place to reduce the voltage for the lights etc. for the tow vehicle. Can I hook this same converter into the house system. Do I need to wory about protecting the inverter,or the solar.
Has anybody any info on how to use the 24volt alternator to charge the 12 volt house sysstem

John, you can use a DC to DC converter with a current limiting feature IF you can find one that is adjustable to suit your batteries or does not put out more voltage than they can handle.

It is generally much less expensive if you can add a second alternator to charge the 12-volt batteries than to try to SAFELY drop the 24.
