t seems that, with summer here, I'm seeing LOTS of vehicles that are VERY overloaded on the roads. Some examples:

Nissan 4x4 pickup loaded 3' over the cab with lumber, with what looked like 4 guys in the cab

S-10 towing a Suburban on a dolly

Caravan towing a big sailboat

Tercel towing a ski boat

Big (25' or so) gooseneck horse trailer (with horses) towed by a Chevy K1500 extended cab

15 bags of concrete mix (60lbs each--900lbs) in a Subaru wagon

A pallet of cinderblocks (about 1500lbs) in a 4-cylinder Mazda pickup

26' 5th wheel RV trailer towed by a 4.6 F-150

Some people are just too stupid to live.

You should come drive the I-5 in southern California. You will see old pick-up trucks with huge racks built up over the cab 14 feet in the air. They are piled high full of old washers, dryers, fridges, and who knows what else all heading for the border. Quite a sight to see these trucks packed up like this. . .

And what about the old trucks loaded sky high with old lumber from a dismanteled building. I often wonder it they ever get to Mexico.

BTW, don't get me wrong. I have no problem with people who make it their business to find another life for these goods south of the border. But by the looks of the loads, I wish they could find a safer way to transport the stuff.

You have found one of my greatest peeves!
No doubt, it's scary how some people seem to be unaware of the danger they present to other users of the highways. This is something I constantly notice when driving. I frequently see materials such as 4x8 sheets of plywood or wonderboard in the backs of trucks unsecured; wheelbarrows upside down and unsecured; can you imagine if it caught some air? I am in construction and know many people who tow overweight loads and later brag about how quickly they made a three to six hundred mile trip.
Drive defensively, folks!!

For some fun check out http://www.darwinawards.com

I spend substantial time in Baja; you all would be amazed at:
1. How few of those "overloaded" rigs actually have any trouble, either in staying on the road without incident, or mechanical damage
2. The amazing fold up (they usually break just behind the 5th wheel) of the occasional truly grossly overloaded over the road tractor with a 40’ flat bed staked 4 feet high with steel, must be 3 or 4 times the max. Legal load in the states!

We have many laws here in the states to keep the ignorant people out of trouble (not “stupid” Johnny, they just don’t know what they don’t know).

In Mexico the theory is that people need to take care of themselves, it is not the job of Big Brother… hence no one sues anyone, no Lawyers, no problemo!

I personally like it, it just makes it hard for the folks who have always been taken care of by Big Brother and never had any personal responsibility. Mexicans are much smarter (wiser) than Gringos, they need to be to become old enough to breed! Darwin Rules!!!

Actually, from what I've heard, most of those loaded trucks going to Mexico are (barely) legal, weightwise.

Towing overweight once is ignorant. Being told you're overweight & ignoring it is dumb. Doing this despite several tickets is STUPID.

I wish I saved the picture, but I have long since deleted it. It was of a couple that loaded their Escort size vehicle at Home Depot. Home Depot even had them sign a waiver before allowing it to be loaded. The back seat was loaded with bags of cement and the roof had a three foot high load of plywood on it. They had a bunch of other stuff too. The car just collapsed.

Ok, here it is.
http://www.heartmagic.com/zzHEAVYL~1.JPG

My take on it is that it "is" a photoshop job because if it were real, the line of the wood against the back-door windows would have smashed them, also at that angle, it's my opinion that there's no way in the world that twine would hold the weight of that much wood from simply sliding off. Plus the shadows are wrong on "crotch" of the plywood sheet sticking out just over the passenger vs the rest of the pile above... BUT that said, it's not inconceivable that someone somewhere was stupid enough to do it!
Personally, I once hired a guy to take '71 my blazer to home depot (15 miles away on windy mountain roads with steep cliffs) and get a hundred bags of concrete, spread over *many* trips... he came back the first time with the rear absoutely filled- 52 fifty pound bags as I remember...the rear axle pinned to the rubber bumper stops and the front wheels actually came off the road with bumps...Amazing that he didn't break an axle and that he actually made it home! Needless to say I throttled his lust for insanity by only giving him enough money for 15 bags on further trips...
Cheers!

hard to believe, but I do.
as someone said "it was NOT photo shopped. I have seen other photos taken by employees of the business at the time it happened."
I have newspaper clips, several views, before this one and thisone included. the load had already slipped from being flat on top... I will see if I can find the clips and scan them for whoever wants more proof

The guy in the Jetta finally made it home to his bus where he sold cigarettes at skoolie rallies. Trouble is, he did the same darned thing with the load of wood on top of his bus...

Here's a picture I took of it!

Stupid, eh? You'd'a thunk he would have learned his lesson!

In another life I worked for the insurance company that insured U-Haul. Most of the tow dolly accidents involved small vehicles towing large ones, especially the down sized pickups like S-10's. They'd hit a rain wet road and try to stop fast. There is hardly any weight on a tow dolly hitch so the rear tires of the S-10 would lock and the rig would jack knife. The other common accident you'd see with this setup is people would put the rear wheels on the tow dolly instead of the front. This left most of the weight at the rear of the setup and caused fish-tailing. It would sometimes get away from them. U-haul has a hook-up book with a listing of acceptable tows for every vehicle. Most of the ones in accidents would lie about what they were really going to tow, as the reputable dealers would not rent it to them for an unacceptable hookup. And, of course, there were some independent dealers that would never ask or didn't care. I also saw pics once of a 1 ton U-Haul truck rented by a contractor that loaded it so heavy with bags of concrete that it broke the truck in the middle.

FYI, if there is a serious accident involving one of their rented trailers, they dispatch a flatbed to pick it up (still loaded) and weigh it on a truck scale. This is done by weighing the truck with the trailer on it and then weighing the truck again afterwards. It the trailer is overloaded, no pay claim.

I live in a town that I refer to as "Yuppieville". I frequently see a high-ticket car with sun roof being used as a lumber hauler from Lowe's to home. Lumber sticking out the sunroof and in some cases a real treat to wonder what the cost savings is if a hole is punched in those nice leather seats. Wouldn't it just be easier (and cheaper) to hire someone to do the "do-it-yourself" project? But ... this IS Yuppieville, and genetic flaws are the norm.

Like most "city" folks , I never knew the value of a small trailer till I bought a house.

(Houses SUCK , but thats a different story).

Now I would not be without a cheap trailer for hauling those 4X8 ply , or other goodies home.

A small hitch is cheap , trailer plates are cheap , and your paid for car insurance covers a small trailer.

Works for ME!

Thats about typical for that stretch of road.
From Marana to Eloy you can expect to find the worst possible circumstance on any road in the country.
It is one of the most likely stretchs to have an oncoming car jump the median and come head-on into oncoming traffic.
Border runners use it with vehicles crammed to standing room only at 90mph...and they arrest 2 dozen speeders and drunks a day along there.

The autographs in rubber of the dead and mamed mark every mile of that road....DON'T BE CAUGHT UNAWARE THERE!!!!

Towing a big ski-boat with a 4-cylinder Tacoma

6-7 guys in a Corsica
