Hello More dumb questions. Right now it looks like the gray tank will handle only the shower and the black tank will take both sinks plus the pot. Both tanks will be the same size, around 125 gallons. Should the black tank be smaller? Should the gray tank be larger? Thanks. Henry |

Henry, The gray tank should be large enough to handle all the sinks, shower, etc., and the black tank should only be used for the toilet. Of course, there are those that have installed a combination Black/Grey tank, but that's not code. Happy building |

I need to learn more about the RV code. Had quessed (incorrectly?) that the food particles and grease and stuff would (should?) go into the black tank along with the potty stuff. And that the shower water alone would go into the gray tank as it would NOT contain any organic waste matter, be it do-do or food or cooking particles. This would make it POSSIBLE (but NOT legal) to safely dump just the shower water like to water trees or a garden. This is what we do now on our homestead. Thanks. Henry |

go to the "tree view" and check out the threads titled: Sewage tanks...Single or separate Which Side For Dump Valves? The toilet, the commode, the water closet More good info [(by others) and very subjective opinions (by me)] than you ever asked for! Peter |

I do not believe there is any code that states that you can not dump the sinks and shower into a combined black water tank. Richard |

I also do not believe there is any such code. And if there is, it defies all logic, since any home on a septic system utilizes a combined waste tank. Also, just looked at a 2 yr. old Country Coach that utilized a factory installed valve to flush the grey thru the black tank, which means u could just as readily divert there for holding. In fact, recently saw a factory Prevo conversion that had a 300 gallon combined. |

The Code, NFPA1192 which about $30 from RVIA, defines two types of holding tanks with different requirements. One (we call it black) they call a tank that holds human waste. The other (we call it the gray) does not. If you only have one tank, it must meet the requirements for a black tank. The traditional wisdom is that there is not enough water to break up the solids in a tank that has only the toilet on it. For this reason, many people also tie the bathroom sink into the black tank. The shower and kitchen go into the other. With this arrangement, the gray is usually twice the size of the black. The 2002 edition of NFPA 1192 is out. I have mine. This is a good time to buy one because there is the full three years until the next edition. Call RVIA at 703/620-6003 Ext 333. I guarantee that if you take the time to read and follow it, it will save you many times its price in mistakes you do not make. |
