My son is going to scrap out the RTS he partially converted. Da book says "the VIN label is on the bottom edge of the upper interior trim panel next to the driver's lamp" This panel has been removed and I am not sure it is still around. The MI Secretary of State computer doesn't like the VIN on the old Wisconsin title but it looks ok to me. (T8H203294) Does anyone happen to know of a secondary location for the VIN on an RTS? My 4104 for example, has it stamped in a panel in the "Tool Bay" below the driver. Thanks. Jim Stacy |

I suspect that VIN number is good for a 1979-80 model bus. The new VIN numbering system didn't take effect until sometime in 1980 to the best of my knowledge. Many motor vehicle offices didn't understand or believe bus VINs before the 17 digit VIN numbers became effective in 1980. |

Jim - Looks like your question was answered over on the Yahoo RTS busnut's group BBS. Was the answer correct? |

Jim, the nomenclature is right. T=Transit 8=8 cylinders H=hydraulic transmission. 2=102 inches wide (6 would be for a 96 inch bus). 03 = third model in the series (the last of the slopebacks, if I remember right. (I bought a fleet of 04 models that were squarebacks). Should then be a space or a hyphen, the 294 is then the serial number (294th built). This follows the old GMC nomenclature. I'm looking at the maintenance manual from the fleet I bought around 1983, by then they're also showing a 17-digit VIN. I don't know when the format change was made. For this later fleet (1983 or so), the manual states that the 17-digit VIN is locaated on a plate mounted to the engine compartment bulkhead at the right side of the coach, and is accessible after opening the transmission compartment access door. R J, I was not able to find any info at the right rear location, either a plate or stamping in the metal. Perhaps this unit had the plate removed or lost, or this series missed the operation. It's hard to believe the only record was a plate held to an easily removeable plastic trim panel by two small nuts. I did find the panel laying around, removed the plate and took the original plate to the license bureau. Even with it in their hand, they were not sure it was the right number. Pete, You are correct (again). This bus was from Madison, we aquired it through Wulf Ward. Thanks for your input, guys. Jim Stacy |
