Doug, depends on what brand and type you have, some hook to the alternator, some hook to one of the drives on the engine with a sender generator or a magnetic sensor on the flywheel let us know what brand you have and maybe somebody can help.If you have the alternator type check the belts driving the alternator.I have a Dixson that is generator sensor driven off the engine and has dip switches on the back to adjust it with good luck

Make sure your tach doesn't have dip switches on the backside to set the accuracy.

Last year for Xmas Da Bride gave me a Tach that operates with reflective tape.

Will probably be at Jacks New Years party , again, and anyone wanting to use it to calibrate their tach is welcome to do so.

There are plenty of these hand held tachs on the eplace. Just search "digital tach" and a bunch of them will come up

I purchased one of these on Ebay. I don't remember the brand, but it has been used on everything from our bus to our lawnmower. Ours seems to work better if you are not in direct sunlight (I guess it has more trouble seeing the reflective tape in bright, direct sunlight). Jack
