Haven’t posted in a while, been busy traveling overseas for work, so only made a few trips in the old girl this year. Since most of our bus trips are to racetracks with no hook-ups, we are faced with the need to dump the black water on return home. The local dump stations are about 20 miles from home and have increased fees from $3-5 last year to $20-25 this year, so getting prohibitively expensive. Does anyone on the board know if it is legal to connect an auxiliary line into my main sewer pipe at the house, with an external “dump pipe”? I would keep it sealed except when dumping. Just wondered if anyone has done it, or has any advise before I approach local council with a permit application. Cheers, Dave PD4501-304 |

Sure can - Why not? They are charging you for the sewer anyway if you fill your fresh water from the house - I use my 3" cleanout that I conveniently put in the driveway - HTH |

My dad did this at his place. Be extra careful or better yet get a septic guy do run a line for you into your pool. Bruce is entirely correct. |

Call your town's building department -- from SOMEONE ELSE'S PHONE. Ask about this, and write down the name of the person you get the answer from. It will range somewhere between "Sure, no problem" to "you need a building permit" to a flat-out NO. Before I started fulltiming, I had this setup at my sticks and bricks house. The building inspector who said "No, sorry, you will need to apply for another hookup permit, get inspected, and so on. However, we don't have standards for the purity of the water used in a cleanout trap. Permit to install a cleanout trap is five bucks." |

The danger is if you have a septic system ,not city discharge. You run the risk of dumping far more liquid at one time than the septic tank can handle , which pushed partially dissolved waste over the lip, and filling the field. The field is only to get rid of water , not the chunks. Second problem is should you use a NO STINK chemical in your black tank it is probably formaldahide , which will kill the action in your septic tank. MUCH UNGOOD The poisoning with chemicals is the reason why so many roadside dump stations at rest areas have been closed. FF |

PS , If you CAN dump into a city sewer system the best way to do it is to get a macerator that clips on to the hose conection , and run a 1 inch hose to the clean out while your dumping. Put it all away between dumps , no permit needed. A 120V macerator is far better than the 12V ones from Par or Jabsco. My favorite Obendorfer. FF |

Why don't you just buy a masserator pump and hook that up to the bus. You hook a garden hose up to it and run it into a toilet or any garage floor drain. Way less costly and easier. Badabing-badabang |

Yup, you are wanting to install a new clean out... Dare if you want, to mention the RV aspect... Any long dormant bylaws about parking an RV? Raise your taxes after the install? Deny your permit and watch you like a hawk for what other infractions? Good luck! happy coaching! buswarrior |

The macerator is a good idea, but a garage floor drain isn't. It may well not have a trap, and if there hasn't been any water down it in the last couple of months, and it doesn't smell, its not connected to the sewer. Happy dumping, G |

A macerator is a very trouble prone device (in 12V) that works like a blender and chops the waste into such fine particles it can be pushed thru a 1 inch hose. The hassle is 2 fold , if there is not enough water the paper and poo are far more than a tiny motor can handle , which required loads of power the 12V doesn't have. Second hassle is the macerator may be far from the DC power so large 8 or 10 wiring is required , but not installed. Simplest cure is a NON RV crap, macerator , the marine Galley Maid is a good choice as it hooks to a water line to help dilute the goop, and the DC motor is about the size of a Chevvy starter . Needs real wiring , and is marine priced . Have seen a fellow that used an AC unit hooked on to an elbow that allowed water to be added as it worked A Kluge version of the Galley Maid , but it did work. FF |

Jack, we have been charged $15 by private campgrounds to dump when we were not staying there. They probably thought they were getting pretty good money as the typical RV is about 25-30 gallons of blackwater. But I felt we got a fair deal as our 150 gallons whooshed out into their dump connection! |

Run the waste into a 55 gallon drum...install a 10 to 20 hp outboard motor....run at maximum speed for ten minutes...pump out 1 inch hose to your choice of drain. |

It is not uncommon to find campgrounds that charge $20 to $25 just to dump!!!! On Niagara Falls blvd in Tonawanda NY there is a campground that charges travelers $25 to dump, right down the street is Colton an RV dealer, that lets you dump for free!! Best to ask around. |

I've found the roadside welcome stations and visitor centers are very knowledgable about free dump stations. Many of the state welcome centers have free dump facilities. AK is great because evey fuel station has free dumps. FWIW |

Hi Guys, thanks for all the great comments, I had not thought about the macerator, but that is a good idea. I will still probably go with a clean out straight into the sewer, I am on city sewer, not a tank, and I do not leave the bus at the house (use a local storage lot) so would not be obvious. The local public camp ground charged $12 if you were not camping there, but recently stopped allowing dumping if your not camping. We have a public dump used by the out house industry that charges $25 and the other choice is Tom Raper RV, also $25. They claim the cost to pump out is what has driven the costs up. Will be pricing macerators over the winter, and shouldn't be to hard to add the external clean out. Thanks for the tips. Dave |

Dave - I think they got out in the nick of time - They sold their 4000+ square foot brick colonial in Cinnamon Run that they built brand new 15 years ago for about what they had in it - things are bad all over but that area is getting hit pretty bad - At least they moved to Fla before hurricane season hit OHIO - LOL |

Hi Niles, We just helped the daughter and family buy a house and the price was low but had a tough time getting a loan. We did get hit by the hurricane, with a fair amount of damage, but the spare bus generator saved the wife, as she was without power for 6 days. I was overseas and missed all the fun. Were still waiting for the insurance adjustor to came and inspect the damage, at least the old bus was not damaged |

I'm on a septic system, can't remember if I put a 750 or a 1000 gal (conc.) tank in about 12 years ago. If I grind the poop, do you think it would be OK to dump here? I used to dump my old Southwind tank in her (I have an inline dump standpipe) without concern...or blending. Now I'm concerned. Bad idea???? Actually, I probably would have been better off If I coulda shoved that whole Southwind down that pipe... |

Jim, If your tank and field are operating properly, no problem. Poop isn't the problem with a septic tank. The problem is hair which never digests, along with the grit in cleansers, the dirt we wash off of ourselves, and the dirt we wash off floors, etc. Then there are eggshells, ground seeds and bones, and everything else we put down garbage disposals, that doesn't digest. All of this stuff goes to the bottom of the first side of the tank and stays there, reducing the digestive area of the tank. Eventually, solids go over the divider into the second side of the tank, and then into the leach field, which is when disaster occurs. The only cure at that point is to pump the tank, and install a new field, as all the little holes in the leach pipe are plugged. If you aren't using chemicals in your black tank, go right ahead. George....which is xactly why momma and I agreed...NO Disposal.....and put NOTHING but dishwater, shower water and head water/waste in the tank. (a bit of bleach now and then the exception) We have a septic at the house, 1200 gallon, and so far, after 11 years, no problems. But then, we have the same agreement in the house. Yes we do dump the coach water into the system. Perhaps lotsa' extra "trash", but it pays off. And the trash bill is the same no matter. Oh, and egg shells don't take up much room in the trash.... It would seem to me the idea when dumping into your own septic system is to take it easy... Don't full flow 50 gallons through a three inch pipe into the septic and expect it not to have issues. Using a macerator and a hose will act as an excellent flow control? happy coaching! buswarrior |
