I was wondering what most of you are running for power steering oil. I have a 1984 MC9. I believe the manual calls for staright 10 wgt but was wondering if any of you run something different. Starting to do some repair on my system.

Jack told me to use ATF fluid. I use to worry about these things till Clark Echoles explained how things get speced.
I need to carry ATF for the transmission, so to simplify things I use it in the PS also.
I need SAE 40 for the motor so I use it in the blower gears and the front wheel bearings also.
Keeps things simple. Jim

Good point James, simple is good. Have any of you drained your system and replaced your power steering oil? Where would I drain it from? Thanks for responses. Once I can figure out how to make my pictures smaller I'll post some pics of what I have been up to in the past year.

If you have oil stay with it don't change to ATF you could harm seals, and if it recomends 10wt you should stick with that how much space does a couple of quarts of oil take to store it. I am suprised the manual does not say how to drain it, but you can look up MCI's web page they have tech suport line you can call and they should be able to tell you how to change the oil.

I installed Sheppard PS in my 4106 and originally used a 10W40 oil in it (which, at the time was the oil I was using in my engine -- ((went to the Delo 100 40w in the engine when I learned better here and else where)). Later drained out what I could and changed to I think a straight weight 10 weight to reduce the PS Pump noise especially when the system is cold. Noticed NO differance in operation but certainly less noise.

for you that have DD in your coaches the advice that was give to me was use only a single grade of oil such as sae 20 as a base weight, if you are in a warm area use 30 and in a cold area use 10 weight. transmittion fluid is NOT recomended nore 10-30 or such. as we all know that you should not put multi grade oil in a DD as it is a two strke, as the power steering pump is connected to the block of the engine and is sealed to the block with a gasket to prevent engine oi form leaking out, so if the seal of the pump leaks any oil that comes out goes into the engine oil, this is why cars all have external belt driven power steering pumps. when i put power steering in my 4104 i made sure it was belt driven, this way i can use fluid that the company used in the unit before i got it,so to sum it up if your pump is attached to the engine use no tranny fluid or such, the space you save by not having to carry an extra qt. of oil for the steering unit. the money that you may spend for an engine rebuild will leave a hugh hole in your bank acct. [$6,000- $12,000] but do it your way it is your coach and your money.

Thanks Mel, that makes a lot of sense, I think I will continue to use 10 weight. I did call the bus line that had the coach in service and they also have been using 10 wgt.
Thanks
