the question that i have is about an angle drive tranny that can be used to replace the 4 speed manual that are standard in gm 4104's. is there a tranny that has more shift positions 4-5 -6 etc, that can be used i do not want an auto as i already have a v730 in the shop but do not want it in my bus. is there a straight tranny that can be used with a angle drive placed on the out put of the main tranny thanks for any info. mel 4104

Mel -

With the 4104, you have your choice of the Spicer 4-speed, the Spicer 4-speed, or the Spicer 4-speed.

Sort of like the old Model T Ford: Any color you like as long as it's black. . .

Problem is space available, and driveshaft angle. Most 5+ speed manual gearboxes are longer than the Spicer, so it would change the angle going into the rear axle, creating shortend U-joint life and vibrations; that is if you could even bolt the angle drive to the back of the 5-speed.

The most common powertrain swap in the 4104 is a 6V92TA / V-730 / 4106-4107-4108 rear axle. Gives you 350 hp w/ the auto trans. But you've already indicated that you don't want to go that route.

BTW, starting w/ the 4106, GM put the angle drive between the clutch and the transmission. Early testing of the 4104 set-up with the more powerful V-8 broke bevel gearhousings with the torque multiplied in the lower gears. Moving the bevels ahead of the transmission solved that problem.

RJ: I know a guy w/4104 who acquired a rebuilt 5spd manual 5 yrs ago and is still measuring trying to come up with a way to fit it into the 04. Last I heard he had almost convinced himself that it could not be done, after several dozen people had already told him that.

Hay RJ, Lay off! I'm one of those guys who keeps beating his head against the wall. Andd it does feel good... when you stop.

There was a 4104 ad in the 7-01 issue of Bus Conversions that had 2' added making it 37' long to accomodate a T-drive consisting of a 6V92TA & an Allison 5-speed auto.

I wish I had been ready to buy then.

Yup, Joe, that was Mike's 4104. I saw it when he had his facility in Long Beach. Don't know who grafted on the extra two feet, but it was well integrated into the original coach, so it was hard to tell unless you looked closely.

IIRC, it had overheating problems, as the radiator wasn't upgraded to handle the additional heat load from the 6V92TA/HT740 combo.

BTW, do you know the name of the Irishman who keeps beating his head against the wall???

Why, it's Rick O'Shay, silly!!

Sorry. . .

RJ
