I would like to install a standard residential style door handle, or something comparable on my coach, so that I can open and close it with ease and not have to use a key every single time. Any ideas? As you know, the coach door is thicker than a house door, therefore a longer shank would be required, and all of the knobs I have seen, have weak metal rods that don't look strong enough to weld an extension. |

You can do it two ways, you may recess a small section of the door about a half inch by making a small pan with lips that attaches to the inside of the door, or you can stop at any good locksmith shop and have them look through their catalogs. Most if not all of the better lock makers have locksets that fit thicker doors. They are pricy, but they will work. In fact you don't want to use any of the cheaper ones because of the issues you pointed out, they are not built to take the forces that they would be subjected to on a bus door. I ran a locksmith service for 15 years, locks are one place where the old saying "you get what you pay for" fits well. Jim |

I have a complete flush mount "truck type" door latch assembly for sale that I purchased to install in a busnuts bus. He changed his mind after I purchased the parts. It is a complete kit with instructions and templates. Let me know if you are interested. Jack |

Jack, I have Trimark on my coach which has a custom mid entry door. I like their entrance door latch assemblies. I have the model with a double lock (dead bolt option). You can see them at www.trimarkcorp.com |

Yes, The latch requires a minimum door thicknes of 2". This latch is made by TriMark and is composed of separate components (interior handle/lock assy., exterior handle/lock assy., latch assy., and striker stud. These compenents are connected by control rods that are cut and bent to fit. This allows the components to be placed where you want them. Jack |

I'm planning a TriMark latch but - to answer the original question - I recently had to replace a domestic latch/lock on a thick door and found that the lock maker offers a "thick door" kit to extend the operating parts for a thicker-than-usual door. Your local hardware store should be able to help you quickly. (Message edited by oonrahnjay on November 10, 2008) |
