I would like to know if anyone can tell me what rear axles will interchange. The H8H649 is the same as a 4905 (I think) Will any GM bus axle work? I would also like to know if the axles are interchangeable from one side to the other. Thanks

Murray -

The forty-foot GMC highway coaches all share the same axle, with the same axle ratio (4.375:1). This includes the 4903, 4905, P8M4905 and H8H649.

The thirty-five-foot coaches (4107, 4108 and P8M4108) all share the same axle, too. Different ratio, however. They get a taller 4.125:1. Only 100 rpm difference at 65 mph between the two.

GM transit bus axles probably will fit, physically, but the ratios are primarily for city use, and you'll end up with a coach that won't do much over 60, if that.

You cannot "flip" a GM axle over, as the angle drive would then be facing the wrong direction. Or are you talking about the axle hardware, like brake drums, brake shoes, axle shafts, etc.??

Thanks RJ
I am not talking about actually flipping the whole rear end over or removing the drive gears. the axles must have been removed on my bus for a tow or else one was robbed for another coach. The bolts on the hub where removed and the axle was slid out. I need to find out what bus axles will fit. This is a 15 min. job without going under the bus at all. The one on the right or passenger side is missing. The left or drivers side is there. I have slid the drivers side out and took a look at it. You have been very helpfull RJ. Sounds like a FLX axle might work. I have access to one of those.

Murray -

Thanks for your kind words, they're appreciated.

The Flx axle might work. IIRC, the pumpkin is offset slightly on the angle-drive coaches, so one shaft is longer than the other. I think. . .

Also check the splines (compare w/ yours), and the hub bolt circle.

Good Luck!

left hand axle GMC part number 2305995
right hand axle GMV part number 2418983
Looking at the GMC parts book
the left axle is shorter than the right axle.
Hope this helps.
