Hi folks,

BNO regular, Rob Williams, sent me an email with a rather startling video attached. He asked that I post this message with the video link, so here it is.

Folks, as you watch this, you'll see an out of control articulated bus. I have very limited experience with these types of buses - I drove one for the Toronto Transit Commission for a very short time and it scared the beegeezus out of me.

This may not even be the same type of bus, because some have rear engines and some have mid-engines and the rear section is a trailer. The TTC had the rear engine type.

The point is, during training, it was said (but, thankfully, never practiced) that when the artic jack-knifed, the operator was to steer opposite what we had been trained to do in the past. In your car (or bus), we are trained to steer in the direction of the skid. In an artic, you are supposed to steer away from the direction of the skid. I think the theory is to straighten out the bus. Frankly, I think its a way to make one poop ones pants.

That said, do enjoy the movie. This is the dialogue that came with the email:

"The 3,150 meter long Lefortovo tunnel, in Russia (near POLAND), is the longest in-city tunnel in all of Europe. It is nicknamed 'The Tunnel of Death'. There is a river running over the tunnel and water leaks at some points. When the temperature dips like it does in winter in Russia, the road freezes and becomes as slippery as...well...ice. The result is the attached video, which was taken during a single day with the tunnel surveillance cameras".

Enjoy,

Ian

I shure those car tires were not the only skid marks being left there! I did a complete 360 on Portage ave. in Winnipeg one winter in a hearse that was pretty heart stoping for me, would shure hate to do something like that today in the bus. Dave L.

You think they would try to heat the road surface in the winter time if that is a constant issue... Can you imagine the recovery efforts from issues like that in a tunnel... I would sure try to avoid that tunnel if I lived near there.

Hi Dan,

The file is a .wmv which should launch automatically in Windows Media Player, presuming you have both of these pieces of software installed in your computer.

If not, right click the link and download it to your desktop and try launching it from there.

The link works properly because it is running on my server and the link points directly to it via the full URL path.

Lemme know if you still have trouble.

There are roads in Denmark that are heated just enough to keep the ice off-you'd think they would do it there-but then again, it's Russia. The arti bus looks like it was an rear engine model-and every time I see this video, it just amazes me that the bus smacks the left wall rather hard and just keeps going? Also, later on there are two trucks that smack into each other-it first appears like one truck then two appear-just a strange clip. Good Luck, TomC

Most of the ones where you can see how they started were due to someone changing lanes. Either someone changed lanes in front of them or they tried to change lanes while going too fast.

Don't the solid white lines mean No Changing Lanes????

Yeah, I looked at that too, but I was thinking (if I were driving that bus) that I could:

1) drive out of the tunnel and pull over to the side of the road, or
2) stop there in the middle of the ice-slick tunnel and inspect the damage and watch the people sliding on the ice behind me pile into the bus.

My choice would have been to get the h*ll out of there immed!
