Curently looking at a 1992 MCI C with a bad 6V92 (3 cylinders) and World transmission. I read on the Bus for Sale Guide that a series 60 will not fit in to these due to confined space:
"MCI 102C3 Bus 1987 - 1993
Disadvantages - engine compartments too small to accommodate 60 series engine (for those wanting to repower)
Has anyone repowered using a Cummins ISM or equivalent in these units or am I better off sticking with a good 6V92 if I get it?
Thanks

A series 50 is much shorter and with a DDEC tweak can pump 330hp and 1200lbs of torque ,or so.

Not great by 60 standards , but an EZ match for a 6V92.

If that MCI has a 6v92 it should have a allison 740 with it. You can put a series 60 with a world transmission in a MCI 102C3. The world is shorter than a 740 and will fit. If it has a world trans. that alone is worth $10,000.00. If the 6V92 is a DD it wouldn't be hard to put in the Series 50 or the Series 60. All of the wireing will be done and the hardest part would be the pipeing for the Air to Air cooler.

Consider replacing the engine with another good used 6v-92 or see about repairing that one. Being that it is a 1992 model, unless you are into doing this work yourself and spend a good deal of money till you are done either way you go, you might want to consider another unit. Used later model coaches have come down a great deal in the last couple of years. As far as a good engine, NIMCO in New Jersey has very good take out engines and parts that should work. If you are paying someone do do the work, I would expect that you'll have about $10,000 or more into it. If you can find a good DDA two cycle man up there, maybe that engine can be repaired for a good deal less money. Just make sure you don't bite on this because the initial price seems cheap. At the very least, be sure the rest of the coach is in very good condition, brakes tires, suspension, body, trans and drive axle.

As John said, the first thing you should do is to take the engine out to see what the problem is. It is always the cheapest to repair what you have, rather then changing to another engine. Personally, I would seriously look at changing it out to a Cummins ISM with Allison World transmission. There are literally hundreds of these setups in trash trucks, and I'm sure you could locate at least one crashed trash truck to use. Then you'll have better hill climbing, better fuel mileage, and an engine that is still being made (until 2010) that everyone knows how to work on. Good Luck, TomC

Don't forget to consider the price for towing from where it is to where you want to do the work. If your ideal shop isn't fairly close, the cost may surprise you.

Towing
Expect to have to pay the better part of 200 dollars per hour rate. Sometimes you may be able to negotiate a better deal. Don't ask me how I know!!!

Thanks for the ideas guys. I am awaiting futher info from the seller. He says it runs right now, but for how long is anyones guess. He is about 700 miles away. He has all maintenance records which may be interesting reading. He says it is pushing oil from all cylinders on the right bank. It is the original engine and has about 450K miles on it. I have also asked him to verify which transmission is in the bus.
Thanks again

450k is in need of a rebuild at the least, or a used engine. Better be cheap...uhhh REAL cheap. ( and real nice)

Vendor states no rust as it has spent it's life out west. New airbags, brakes, tires at 75%. Less than $10K US is his price. I know this is a buyers market..but I'm thinking this is a good deal even if it does need an engine. Comments welcome....

It comes down to one thing if you think it is a good deal and you like what you see then go for it! It will be you that owns it and drives it so if it pleases you dont worry about what others think :-)
just my thoughts on this as people think I paid to much for mine and I dont care I like it!!

A commercial rebuilt short block (NOT DD!) is about $5K , the real question is WHO does the swop?

Truck places know ZERO! about busses , so tale 5x longer to swop. And its your $75 an hour while they learn.

Get a price from a local BUS charter co, if you are not doing it in your back yard.

Check with some of the charter outfits in your neck of the woods to see what they might have sitting on the shop floor. They may have an engine that is not being used in their newer units.
I brought home a newly refreshed 6v92 last week (new heads injectorts etc.) that was surplus to them at a very attractive price.

Will do Joe. Still waiting to hear back from seller. You weren't the one who got that 89 Prevost XL at the RB auction in Edm on friday for $2500 did you?

Well Tim its this way!!!!!
When I went to the auction on thursday morning the wife said when I was leaving " so help me Hanna if you come home with another bus"
Because of that I didnot stick up my hand at the appropiate time. It was actually auctioned on friday morning and I was there during the proceedings. It went via the internet to somebody in Manitoba. The engine I believe was fairly tired. I ran it a couple of days before the auction. Interior was good but exterior on the roughside. Nothing that a few replacement baggage doors wouldnot fix. This unit was originally used by Red Arrow nost likely as a commuter between Edmonton and Calgary.

RB auction
At the EDM auction the amount of stuff going through is almost mindnumbing. Three days of auctioning with three rings going for two days and no time being wasted. The thomas transits went for 3000 dollars, more money than the Prevost XL.

Los Angeles Freightliner is one of the few truck dealers I know that works both on motorhomes and buses. But-labot rates are high since it is in Los Angeles. Good Luck, TomC

That is the XL.
