Hmmm, one thing then another! Getting a heavy vibration (similar to driving on the rumble strips on sides of some interstates) upon accelleration. Smooths out fine at hwy speeds (50)
Other than tranny fluid level any thoughts on what a guy can check ? (Engine idles fine, no rumble when coasting, only upon fuel application)
Thanx!

This is most likely bad u joints in the drive line. Not big deal at all. Pull the drive line and take to a driveline shop and make sure to install exactly as it was.

Worn U joints, or an injector not injecting.
Please tell us if you have any unusual smoke while accelerating.
As the convertor doesn't lock up until halfway thru second gear, (it feels like the second shift) do you have the vibes from a stop, or after lockup?
Check the U joints before you drive it again.

Had the same problem that turned out to be severely worn splines on the drive shaft slip joint.

The mystery continues...blocked up bus and had a look, all seems tight w/ u-joints & flanges. Dif fluid is correct level.
George; no smoke, running fine. Not sure about exactly when vibes begin re:convertot locking up, but suspect it's after. (speeds in town)
Was liking the u-joint theories, don't like thoughts of tranny problem !

Try driving very slow around a parking lot with no other noise around. I heard mine clicking when I did that at an RV park. U joints will do the same thing and is what I thought my problem was.

At faster speeds it was masked by all the other noises.

If you've never done it before, it's time to remove the driveshaft and check out the joints and splines. If joints have any rust or wear in journals, just replace them. They are one of the cheapest items to replace considering their intended job. Might as well clean shaft thoroughly and paint so it looks pretty and gives you that warm feeling every time you look at it.Then lubricate on a regular interval per maint. book.

Got a lump on a tire? Loose wheels? Flat tire? motor mount bolts tight, bellhousing bolts tight? Drivelines are heavy but you can shake them if your strong, check for slop at the input and output side even if the ujoints are OK.

How is quality of Differential oil?
Look for metal particles in oil to see if pinion bearings might be on the way out.

The guy below brought his car to the shop because of a small vibration.
I know it's not your case, but look at these pictures.

When questioned he said he ran over a Mattress a few weeks earlier?

OH DEAR!?!?!?!?

That is simply an amazing set of photos.

We could go out and run over 100 mattresses and I don't think we could duplicate this!

Thanks for sharing!

happy coaching!

You can't check the u-joints with the driveline in place. Remove the driveline and check the u-joints for freedom of movement through their full range. U-joint generally sieze and cause the rearend or transmission to move up and down but under accelleration the rearend is hard against its stops and you feel the siezed u-joint as the rearend now moves up and down against the stops.
