Well I made it 45 miles towards Quartzsite today when on the outskirts of Showlow, my tranny died! I had downshifted as I entered town, and the spedo went crazy... took a minute for me to figure out that the engine was running but no transmission. Almost like a drive line had fallen off. Found a place to stop, left everything running and first checked the transmission fluid. It was bone dry! Added a quart an half of Transyd and still nothing, just acts like it's in nuetral. No lurch or strain when running through the gears. Pretty sure the linkage is intact ( won't start in gear of course). Help please! Nine One Five 479 Two Four One One

__. Doyle, you say that the *speedo* went crazy but the bus doesn't move? If that's so, I'd think it would point towards some part failure between the speedo drive takeoff and the wheels. If the speedo drive is early in the transmission train, the failure could be in the transmission but this seems unlikely.

__. I can't do anything but take a WAIG, but the speedo thing may be very important to pointing you toward the correct failure mechanism.

I think Bruce hit it on the head.If your spedo is on the output of the trans. check to see if the drive shaft is turning when you put it in gear. If you lost a outer bearning in the rear it could cause this problem.

Here's what I know now... Added 1 1/2 gal of tranny fluid (over filled), but when I put it in gear I felt the tranny engage (had it on the rear jacks and am by myself) I lowered the jacks, released the brakes and tried to go.... the spedo went, but not the bus... I'm thinking the drop-box is gone. Am on an exit lane on Hwy 60 East end of Show Low. I expect the law to come by anytime and make me have it towed. I remember a horror story of someone in these parts with a blown drop-box. Anyone know of wrench anywhere close? Luvrbus said Wayne might have a drop-box. He's my next call.

Thanks to all.

Got a reasonable tow $85.00 (about a mile) to the Catepillar equipment shop. The drop box end of the drive shaft spins under hand power and there's lots of metal in the pumpkin juice; so we suspect the drop box is gone. Gonna pull it out and see what's next. More later. Thanks to all that helped and gave input. Happy New Year! (Check those fluid levels!!!!)

Doyle a dropbox dosn't normaly go all at once. it could but if you jack it up and turn a wheel it will change the location of the gear teath. When that happened to mine it was a outer bearning in the rear. It let the small gear drop down and no longer made contact. If you have to have a rear John has a couple here in Lakeland. When mine went I had stoped at a stoplight when it changed it just wouldn't go.

Sounds as if you may be in $$$ territory, Doyle. Hope it's quick and (reasonably) cheap. Good luck with it.

It's 1:00 am (MST) here in Az. and pretty darn cold!!!! 13 degrees. So it's full gen set and heaters for an hour or so! Al least I had shore power on the 7 degree nights. Good news is the water pumps hadn't frozen up yet.

Jack, since I was towed (just pulled on a chain) I assume that the running gear has been rotated and the input end of the drop box (drive shaft) turns free by hand with the wheels on the ground which indicates to me and the wrench that it's pretty much gone. Gonna lift the rear wheels a couple of feet on a wheel lift platform and drop out the differential and drop box assembly. Any one got any alternate opinion on diagnostics or how to proceed. Everyone here seems money sensitive, but it ain't over yet!!! Keep your fingers and eyes crossed for me. Thanks. dg

You got to pull them both to do the job and get it cleaned. If I can help in finding parts let me know. After all these years with the Eagle I know where lots of the parts are. If you can turn the input to the drop box that will be the problem. Hope it dosn't go any deaper than that. My number is in the profile if I can help.

Doyle, when you find the problem I have a few gears for the drop box and Gary at B&B in Vegas will have parts and I can go to Vegas and pick them up and meet you halfway I am about 400 miles from you.when he takes the drop box apart check for the special washer behind the yoke on the input shaft if it is not there that is what caused your problem cost 55 bucks from Norris at Jefferson in OKC.another point don't let them put it together with silicone I have a set of gaskets good luck

Luvrbus, So this washer is it on the inside of the dropbox? Or is it right at the yoke on the outside? Is this something that slipped by, by mistake at Rockwell? What years are included in this? I have an Eagle drop and rear in my MCI. Thanks Tom Y

Tom, the washer is behind the yoke where the seal is and yes Rockwell had a problem because the yoke would bottom out and not tighten to the right torque, and also re builders would leave it out because of the price 55 bucks is a lot of cash for 1/4 in washer but cheap in the long haul. good luck

It's official! It's a waller'ed out ring gear that all the bolts got loose and sheared off as it was attached to the carrier. The drop box is ok, but it's a new ring gear and carrier assembly. Gary at B&B has one, so I'm off to Las Vegas in the toad to pick 'er up. Thanks to everyone for the input, and assistance.
