Hey Guys: After reading a lot of the posts about some of the problems I have experienced, I probably need to rebuild my air compressor and dryer. Is this a fairly reasonable job for other than a professional mechanic? I know that there have been posts about the ease of securing kits to rebuild these, but in my earlier days, you could get a "kit" to rebuild a Holley carbureator, but it took a MIT engineer grad to accomplish it. Have an 80 Eagle 8V71, and am finding a little oil in the main tank when manually dumped. Also getting quite a bit of condensation, so the dryer must not be at 100%. I know where the dryer unit is located, but where is the compressor unit located? Any thots would be a great help. |

Buddy, it is on the back of the engine you get to it by removeing the covers in the middel at the back of the bus the small one not the large one exchange the compressor it's the best way and dryers are easy to rebuild good luck |

Luvrbus Where is the oil coming from that I am finding in my system? Is this like other compressors that have oil in it, or does it use oil from the engine? Will I need to "purge" or clean out my air lines, and if so, how do I do that? Will simply replacing the compressor and rebuilding the dryer take care of my problem? Roughly, how much is a new or rebuilt/reman compressor and where is the best place to find one? Are they standard to most engines, etc? As you can tell, I'm not too smart about these things. Any advice will be helpful. |

Cliffords advice on buying an already rebuilt compressor is smart. The oil for the compressor comes from the engine, and it will show up in the lines if the rings get bad. Sometimes compressors are on eBay. Like Niles said get the number off the compressor and do a google search. There are places you can exchange what you have for a new-rebuilt model. Not sure who though. Not just any compressor will work as it should be mounted on the rear of the engine. Trucks are usually mounted on a couple of brackets, yours is different. Buddy, Eagle used a different compressor than most (he discharge line is on the drivers) side find the tag or remove the compressor and take it to Truck parts store in your area you need it off anyway to exchange or pay a core charge,it's not a big deal to remove it.Buy a new govenor and if you have a 500 or 600 upgrade to a 700 no difference in the price for the oil in lines when you get the dryer going it cleans most of that up since you been dumping the tanks.Fwiw Norris at Jefferson will have the parts number for the 700 and they are not bad on the price for the compressor the price will be from about 250 to 400 depending on who did the rebuild and what brand Bendix is not the only brand if you like I can find a # for you good luck (Message edited by luvrbus on January 27, 2009) (Message edited by luvrbus on January 27, 2009) (Message edited by luvrbus on January 27, 2009) |
