Does anyone know what year MCI switched over from Ross to Shepherd steering? I have a '80 MC9 & was wondering what model steering I have, and if an upgrade to the newer style is recommended. Thanks for your replies. |

MCI has never had a Shepard steering put in at factory. You have the old ram type. The late 82s and newer had the intrcal type that makes them steer good. But if you have bad bushing or worn king pins and ty rod end that need replaced. nothing will help. Fred |

If you have an extra $1500 (DIY) or $2500 (have someone else do it) it will be the best money you could spend on the bus as far as driving enjoyment goes. Most likely the old external piston system on your bus is tired and the new integral Ross box will make a world of difference. Since the work is beneath the floor, it can be done anytime, before or after the conversion is done. Jim |

Hi Hank, Give Grant a call at US Coach. He helped me get the right box for my MC8. I had it installed at a Freightliner shop for about $500. It took a lot of the slop out of my steering. Craig S |

It sounds like the current steering system will need an upgrade. Thanks to all for your replies and helpful information. |
