When I first got the bus, my mechanic told me the transmission in my MC-8 had been upgraded, but I thought he meant from a 3-speed to a 4-speed. I should have noticed before now (I drove it all the way to Ontario from Washington State, where I bought it), but one of my sons recently pointed out that it shifts 4 times from a stop to highway speed. That would make it a 5-speed. Is this an HT750? Is there an ID plate on it somewhere that would show this? DaveD |

It could still be a 740 4 speed. Your son may be counting converter lockup at about 22mph as a shift. Shifts should occur at about 12-14 into second then 34-36 into third and then 50-55 into fourth. Check it out next time you drive it. Jim |

If you have a tack, it is easy to tell if it is a 4-speed or a 5-speed. With the last shift, if it runs up to 2100 rpm, then drops about 37% to 38% (2100 to 1525 or sosss) then it is a 4-speed. However, if it only drops about 25 to 26% for the last shift (2100 to 1680 or sosss) (closer ratios) then it is probably a 5-speed. Yea, the convertor lockup fools lots of people thinking that it's a gear shift. It ain't. |

Dave, Try for the name plate. It should be on the driver's side of the transmission case. If an HT754 or the like has been installed, to do it properly, the shifter up front should have been modified to allow 5 forward gear positions too. I'm in Toronto, are you nearby? I have a '75 MC8. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Henry is right on with the tach verification. I have a '90 w/ a 753 ATEC which starts in 2nd. Only way to get 1st is manually select it at idle and under 5 mph. |

Thanks. I'll check the nameplate as well. I'm near Spencerville, about 40 miles south of Ottawa. DaveD |

Also forgot to add (I hate getting middleaged!) that the same thing done with the tack will work with the speedo also. Just redline each gear against the governor and note the maximum road speed. Then calculate the percent of gain per gear. Big jump means (usually) a 4-speed. Narrow jumps means (usually) a 5-speed. Yea, also just looks at the shifter. A 4-speed usually (not always) has four slots forward. A 5-speed usually five positions. Thanks and good luck. |
