Can you use Dexron III or Mercon in a V730 transmission, I don't have a service manual to look this up, so you guys who have experience with the V730 let me know please. The bottle does say it is approved for Allison C4. |

I have a 730 in my Grumman and I use Dexron III, as per the Grumman Manual. Had 87k miles when I bought it and I have put approx 75k since; no problems still shifts smooth. |

Dextron III is the usual fluid. Some of the transit systems also use torque fluid. I don't know that they got much different service out of it. I'd stick with the Dextron. That's what I always used in my 730's. |

I have a little collection of data for the V730 & VS2 tranyz I gleemed from fellow bus folks; includes description, operation, & fialures. If you'd like a copy i'll be happy to send it to you. Here is a statement from G Lowry: "For the V730, Allison came out with a service bulletin (Acceptable C-4 fluids) that approves the use of 15W40 in their transmissions. In fact, they have a large listing of C-4 fluids that are so approved, almost any kind of engine oil or hydraulic oil. I have been using the 15W40 Delo in my automatics for several years with excellent results. Also it is much cheaper." Joe |

Some years back I attended a DD/Allison clinic at an FMCA convention where the hot topic was V730 oil, all the reps agreed on straight 30 engine oil in warmer climates stating that it was also recommended in the cooler reigns but that you would be a little sluggish until the oil reached temperature, the reps officially stated DELO. However, during the gathering after the clinic the reps said that the other brand (Rotella) was a better choice! Tom C |
