I have hydraulic brakes, but plan on running rear air suspension. Rather than an electric compressor, I want to use an engine-driven air compressor (like on air-brake trucks). It's a gas engine (Lima big-block). A local suspension guy (he's probably forgotten more about airbag setups than any other 3 people remember) says he can do it just as easily with an engine-driven compressor as an electric one. Any ideas--like, will an F-600 or F-800 comp work? I have A/C & no power steering.

Some websearching will probably find you a compressor and mounting brackets, pulleys, tensioner, etc. Just about any MD truck setup should work and plumbing will be lots simpler than air brakes--a tank with a check valve on the inlet should do it! Don't forget to plumb an outside air chuck for airing tires, running tools, etc.

Jeepers frequently add air compresssors to their gasser engines for airing up tires in the boonies etc. Might look at a kit such as thouse. Probably expensive though. Maybe you could adapt one from an old air compressor. . .?

Baja racers and other off-road types use air conditioning pumps to fill tires in the boonies.

They are a cheap junkyard item, and the mounts often bolt on or can be easily adapted.
They use a manual on off switch for the electric clutch to turn it on when needed and it will freewheel and draw Zero power when not in use. They do pump too much pressure for tire inflation so a simple pressure blow off is also used, like the ones used on cheap home air compressors.

I have thought of putting one on my VW for years but never got around to it.

A/C compressors aren't designed to be air compressors. I know they'll work--my J-20 had a converted Wagoneer compressor feeding 2 air tanks to run tools. However, I don't think they'll hold up under essentially constant use--with airbags, the compressor will constantly be turning on & off. An air-brake compressor is designed for this; an A/C comp isn't. With intermittent use, I blew up 1 on my Jeep.
