Yeah, a super cool site. For quite awhile now I have been longing and lusting over hopping up my Big Cam Cummins 855 250hp into a super duper (and expensive!) 800hp Cummins. The only problem is that I would have more $$$$ in just the engine (not counting driveline upgrades) than in the ENTIRE conversion budget! I mean, I would have to GET A JOB!!! Henry. |

Henry, I looked at that site, too. I'm afraid I can't do very much with the older 220 Cummins. Looks like you have the perfect power plant for mods. Jim |

Strange you said that. Nothing at all wrong with your older 743 Cummins. I have talked to several Cummins mechanics and they all pretty much tell me that even 40 years ago they were hopping up the older mills. Seems your 743 had a factory rating of 335 hp with the old mechanical blower. Also a 335 rating with the later turbo, but no intercooler. The 743 lacked sufficient headbolts for very high power ratings. Seems the head gaskets would weep. Anyway, if you can find a good older Cummins mechanic who would be willing to make mods on the pump and injector cups. And if you are willing to find lower compression pistons or perhaps a thick head gasket, retard the timing, etc., or perhaps even use factory parts you can upgrade your older 200/220 up into a factory 335. The problem is that for the same money you can just swap out your 743 for a later big cam 855. Then the sky is the limit just about as far as power (and money). Good luck. CROWNS FOREVER!! |

Well, that is because unlike a 2 stroke Detroit, lots can be done to the big cam 855 Cummins. When meaning lots, we mean like 2X or 3X the power. All it takes is money. My Crown has the 250 hp big cam. With only $bread$ and lack of common sense, the power can be increased to over 800 hp. Why anyone would want to do so remains kinda fuzzy to me, but then I am not rich and crazy. The driveline beefing alone would cost a fortune. For a cool website on hopping up Cummin's in general look no further than this board. A very cool site and I do wish I was $rich$. Thanks. |
