I am looking at building a 4104 but I need to pull a trailer that has 700-1000# of tongue wt. (6000-7000# total). Is it possible to build a hitch to withstand those loads? Will the 671 and 4-speed combo pull it? If the 4104 won't work, what will?

Although there have been folks that have gotten away with much more ,
on a GM because the engine hangs from the roof of the coach the usual limit is considered to be 300lbs , with about 600 as max tongue weight.

In the mountains a 6-71 is fairly sedate as is , with a extra 3 or 4 tons , it could be very scenic.

Most any other brand of coach does NOT have superb lightweight aircraft style monocoque construction and would probably be better as a tow mule.

Shane, I owned a 4104 for several years and pulled a 25 ft trailer full of sand rails and four wheelers for several years. Travel was in the low desert area of California from Pasadena to the sand dunes at Glamis. I definitely was slow on the upgrades, but no slower than a lot of the semis and some other motorhomes. Could cruise on the level at about 60-65.
I do not remember anything about how the hitch was attached, other than I think it was to the bumper and engine cradle, but never any sign of problem.

Go to gmc-bus nuts and check the files.Tuck has photos on how to correctely make and install a hitch to a 4104.The hitch should never be only attached to the engine cradle,it needs to go and attach to the bus bulk head

I appreciate your valid concerns regarding towing a heavy trailer. I have the same goal/problem with my 1974 Crown Super Coach 10-wheeler.

The coach chassis is HUGE, with a 47,160# GVWR. Imagine a logging truck with a bus body. The only problem is.....

Crown only ran the main frame to just behind the tandem drivers, them stopped them. The entire rear 8 to 10 feet of the body is essentially unsuported.

The factory compensated by severely beefing up the rear of the body and have supporting tension bars holding up the rear of the coach, bolted to the main frame.

I want to exploit the huge rear trunk that runs across the entire rear of the coach. Also want to mount a HUGE rear trailer hitch or pintel hook with an air hookup thing soosss I can tow (eventually) a old 18,000# Crown or Seagrave fire engine to various fire musters.

Soosss....I am right now looking at extending the main frame rails down and into the rear trunk area all of the way to the rear bumper and tie it all together for the heavy hitch.

Will also be using the frame extensions to mount the second battery bank, a second 100 gal fuel tank, and the planned diesel gen set. Putting it all here to balance the coach.

Like you, I am concerned with the performance and cooling ability of the finished motorcoach. Looks like I will just have to look and see. With a will, there is a way. Good luck.

I tow a 8800 lb trailer with 1250 lbs tongue wgt with my 4104 I broke (split ) the alum crossmember that makes up the back of the cradle where the engine and bumper attaches. We removed it and replaced it with 8" 26 lbs per foot steel channel. Yes a lot of drilling and work but problem solved.
