I have a constant oil drip on the right side of my MCI 9. It has a detroit 8v 71 in it. Is this common and how can I get it to stop?

It may be an airbox drain. I've found that my MC-8 drips on the drivers side drain tube, when the bus is idled for any length of time, yet on the highway, oil consumption is not excessive. I'm not sure what is the norm for these engines. I assume some of it must be due to wear of oil control rings, blower seals, etc. and some must be characteristic of a 2-stroke diesel.

You can put a hose on the blower box vents and catch the oil in a container of some kind. I use and old filther with a drain in it. I then drain the oil out of it about once a week. Never get much but a little oil goes a long way. Hope this helps.

I have heard that DD sells a drain kit to catch the excess oil drips.

My 8/71 has a hose on the air box drain with a check valve and runs the oil back into the engine, been on there since 87 and no problems.

Oil cooler gaskets are bad to leak (block mounted).
You all most need a scavenger pan under the engine on the DD, just the nature of the beast.
Wisconsin will run you out of the state if you are stopped at a check point and checked under the unit for leaks.
These are great engines I have used for years but MOST leak.

Many months ago somebody indicated that DD did not recommend running the air box drain oil back into the engine. Do not recall, but possibly Jeff, spelled Geoff in the english fashion.

DD did at one time recommend running back into the crankcase. That was revised to adding the collection tank with check valves at the air box discharge point. One thing for sure, EPA does not like it being discharged on the ground. Many have devised their own collection tanks. However, on your typical transit, the engine is layed on it's side and the left bank naturally drains to the crankcase; there is no external air box drain, which leads me to wonder what the harm is in piping the right bank back also? With the check valve kit, it is only functional at idle and the way I understand it, the air boxes get "scavenged" above idle, so I really am not convinced of any harm done regardless of what method utilized keeps it off the ground.

Where is the drain connected back into the engine?

Will have to look at the engine again to see its been running into the block for years , no problems at all, the mech that did it has a great reputation and a lot of experience . especially with engines worked for geyhound for 20+ years, i will look anyway , i am moving and things are a bit busy
