I am looking at getting a small pickup to tow so I can haul my golfcart in it. Chev S-10 Ford Ranger Dodge Dakota 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? Manual or Automatic? I want to tow it with 4 wheels down I've heard you can tow a manual with it just in neautral. I've heard you can tow an automatic if its 4 wheel drive just by putting the trans and tranfer case in neutral. Some of you guys that have already figured it out please let me know something. The Easiest is any 2 WD and stick. ONLY some 4WD can use the transfer case in Neutral. FAST FRED |

I have a 96 GMC Jimmy, auto 4wd, and up to now, I have learned that I have to keep the 4wd on 2wd and have to add a REMCO device that disconnects the drive shaft from the rear end, OR I have to put the rear end on a tow dolly and pull her backwords. Hope that helps - cd |

Would your golf cart fit into a VW Rabbit pickup? If soosss, then maybe think about a VW Rabbit diesel pickup. Kinda like the sedan, only the headroom was a little bit less. Had a pickup box in the back. Can be towed wheels down no problemo. Ask Fast Fred more about VW Rabbit Diesels in general. Good luck. |

Possibly just as important is which pickup will a golf cart fit into. You may have already scoped this out, but thought I'd mention it. A friend of mine was going to use his older toyota for the same purpose. It wouldn't fit with the tail gate closed. |

Yea, are golf carts all pretty much the same size? A VW Rabbit Diesel Pickup has a pretty small rear box. May actually be a little smaller than a Toy bed, thus a standard sized cart may not fit. Somewhere I have.... A VW Rabbit manual that covers the pickup truck version and I will try to find it and get the bed dimensions. Or there are a couple of VW pickups running around town and maybe I can ask to measure them for you. The neat thing about the Rabbit Pickup diesel is that they are pretty inexpensive ($1000-$2500) compared to a newer S-10. Plus the diesel burns diesel like the coach, thus in effect you always have a spare fuel tank. The VW pickup holds around 18 gallons or sooss. |

Golf carts seem to all be 4 ft x 8 ft. Should fit in a standard pickup bed. Only problem is getting it up there! They will also fit in a Prevost bay with steering column modifications so the column folds down. Jim |

I haven't seen anyone mention what happens to the towing characteristics of the pickup when there is a golf cart in it. What came to mind was the weight of the motor and batteries. I have no idea what the carts weigh. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 |

Good point!----I had not even thought about how much a golf cart weighs. Got to be fairly heavy with at least 6 batts and stuff. Best guess 600 to 900 pounds? Yea, not sure at all now if that would affect a VW Rabbit diesel pickup's handling/towing characteristics goin down the road. Plus add the fact that a VW's pickup box is not that big---a 4x8 golf cart would not even physically fit. At any rate that is a LOT of top weight. |

Most 2WD/sticks can be flat-towed. Most 4WD's with a T-case lever on the floor can also be towed. NO compact has an 8' box--the Dak does, but it's really not a compact. Compact shortboxes are generally 6'; longbeds are 7' long (Daks are 6.5' & 8', respectively, as are most fullsizes). Also, will the smaller trucks handle the weight of a golf cart safely? My friend's 1980 VW pickup (gas/4-speed) struggles with a quad or 3 dirtbikes in the box. Don't overlook the Jeep Commanche, either: straight front axle, potent engine (4.0 I-6), generally 4WD, 4x4's can be flat-towed. |
