The GMC upper steering box bevel gears, in the 1:1 ratio seem to be getting hard to find, used. Has anyone ever tried to change the actual gears inside the housing, from the 1:5 to the 1: Any comments.

Yep i did, just take it apart and be super careful not to damage the shims, bolt em in and adjust the lash and your good to go. also be careful to keep it clean and be careful of the bearings. i had no problem . the gears come from a 4905 1973 or newer with sheppard from the factory and are hard to find since everyone is looking new ones are 3 times the price that is reasnable. any questions e-mail me . i buy everyset i can find because someone is always looking , i dont try to make anymoney just trying to help as i remember what a time i had finding them.

Since finding GMC upper gearbox 1:1 ratio gears are hard to find my question is --has anyone swapped the placement of the 1 1/2 to 1 gears to become 1 to 1 1/2 ratio..

The 18 tooth is the pinion gear, it has a hole to attach to the stearing shaft. The 27 tooth is the bevel gear that is part of a short stub shaft which is then connected connected to the propeller shaft that goes to the stearing box on front axle. So no you can't swap places.

I changed the bevel gears in my 4104 which has a 4106 steering column. It is not hard at all to change the gears. Be super careful with the shims. Also be super careful with the flat needle bearing (which looks kinda like a washer and you will miss it if you are not careful. I screwed the one up on mine and had to order a replacement. The bearing is only .87 cents and I ordered extra. B ut if it is not in there right you will crush it so be careful.
The change to 1 to 1 gears help my bus a lots. It drives great now.
Hope this helps.

Molsdorf, click on the "edit" button on your original message and you can correct it. Probably can eliminate your second post entirely, but I am not sure of that. One of the very nice feature on this board. Thanks, I@n.
