I just came back from New england dragway in epping NH for truck nationals and there was a fiberglass bodied pickup with a 6v53 alluminum block motor running two turbos at forty pounds of boost and on nitrous oxide making 890 horse get this on stock lower end with naturally aspirated pistons running nine seconds in the quarter mile! I don't know what size injectors he was running but they must have been huge. And to think i was worried about going too big on my injectors in my 6v71. How come the engine can put up with all that extra horse power on a factory motor and with nitrous? I did'nt think nitrous would work on diesels. Could it be because of the short time the motor pulls that much horse power? I know that on a long grade on the highway the motor would self destruct correct? Good motors these detroits are. Steve |

Yikes..................... Of course, the 800+HP daily-driven Cummins Rams are pretty crazy. |

Nitrous works because it adds oxygen to the engine. N2 O2 I think it is. Laughing gas. Dentists used much less to pull teeth. He he he. The mill probably holds together because of the short duty cycle and because....it is a Detroit which we all know are ....perfect! He he he. How big of injectors do you want? We had a local truck puller guy out here in OR who had an 8V53TT with 160 injectors running nitro, diesel and 4000 rpm. Our old fire engines were 671N's and 8V71N's and they had N90 injectors. 2500 rpm. Hardly any mufflers and they sounded sooosssss cool! Thanks. |

Best sound ever: Tweakes Cummins 12-valve 5.9 running a no-catalyst, unmuffled FIVE INCH exhaust at WOT pulling about a 38' 5th wheel up a hill at ~80MPH. I'm not saying it's particularly BRIGHT, but it sure sounded cool. Close second: straightpiped PowerStroke at WOT & ~3000RPM. |

Nitrous oxide (N02) is one part nitrogen and two parts oxygen. It isnt the nitrous that makes the engine produce more power, it's the extra fuel you inject into the engine. The oxygen allows the extra fuel to burn and the nitogen cools things down so the engine doesn't melt. I'd imagine the concept would work just as well in diesels as in gas engines. I havent been to Epping in ages...Not since I used to race there back in the 80's. I live less than an hour from Epping now. I should get over there now and then. Ross |

Thanks about the Nitrous. I confused it with H2O2 which I think is hydrogen peroxide. The cooolest sound? I am still holding out for a V8 unmuffled Detroit spinning about 2000 rowing thru the gears. They sound the coolest! Remember years and years ago lying in the dorm bed at Engine 6 listening to Engine 2 going on a call. Over 1 mile away. Actually the exhaust note was the loudest if they were going in the opposite direction. A 350hp 8V71N with N90's and no mufflers to speak of. Second closest coolest sound would be a 8V92. Sounds slightly mellower and lower toned for some reason. Thanks guys and nitrous forever!!! |

OK, I heard something even cooler today: OLD Cummins-powered 10-wheeler AutoCar (flatbed loaded with what looked like lumber) at WOT with a straightpipe. It totally drowned out my WOT PowerStroke-powered shuttle bus. |

straight pipe and no muffler? NO thanks- I did that for one trip and it was cool for about five minutes then it was annoying. You know-- come to think of it my wife was complaining so loud --(why did you take the muffler off? everybody knows you need a muffler etc.etc.etc.)-- that it may have been her that was annoying. Anyway-- it was a bad experience. Loud pipes save lives so they say but if it were true the pipes would face forward to warn of your arrival. Midasize and be considerate of your fellow man. shhhhhh quiet is good quiet is good quiet is good Steve |
