On the side of my 4 speed there is a drain at the bottom, another plug about 3-4 inches up, then a large plug about 1/2 way up the trans. We just reinstalled the 8-71 after an 8-92 blower and belhousing swap, and i am not sure what is the correct fill, full level plug on the trans. |

The plug about half way up will be your fill plug. Fill the transmission till the oil runs out there. If you will look at the rear end you will find one about the same height. Hope this helps. |

Usually the oil level is maintained evenly in between the main and countershafts on a conventional manual tranny. This is done to properly lube both sets of gears and bearings. Thus the big plug half way up your case is probably the correct one and bigger for ease of maintenance. Why it has the second lower plug is beyond me... Unless it was for an optional transmission lube oil cooler or something like that or perhaps a plug for an oil temp gage sender. Good luck. |

Henry, you're correct about the extra plug. I recently saw a 4905 with an external oil filter and oil cooler piped into that lower plug. HTH and Cheers...JJ |
