am currently doing a 65 crown have a new 1986 855 cummins 300hp was a very interesting experience would like to speak with anyone who loves crowns as much as i do

I have a 1969 10-wheeler with a Cummins 262 and an Allison HT70 with a built in retarder.

I love my bus!

About the only way it could be any better is if it had another 100 HP.

Do I understand you correctly that you repowered your Crown with a Cummins 300? If you went to all that trouble why not a BCIII 350/400?

About the only thing I don't like about my bus is the old small cam engines are relatively low compression engines and they don't like to start when it gets cold outside.

The 262 is the turbo version of the 220 which was 743 CI. The 300 is the turbo version of the 250 which was 855 CI.

The Crown model numbers contain the CI displacement of the engine that came from the factory.

For instance, my bus is a model 2A-743-11. That translates to a three axle bus with a Cummins 262 and an Allison automatic transmission. If the model number was A-426T-11 it would be a two axle bus with a Detroit Diesel 6-71T and an Allison automatic transmission.

For more information go to the Buskid's or the Buslady's websites. They have done extensive research on Crowns. In fact, they are the ones I got the information from about my bus.

If the bus you are looking at has the big engine, if the price is right, go for it.

the crown i look at yesterday had some bad rust on it.is this normal?i have been told that crowns were aluminum..john h.

hi john crowns are constructed with a steel frame coveredby aluminum and steel the roof and lower sides are covered with aluminum the center sections that have the rub rails are steel panels where is the rust you are talking about the nice thing about the crown is that it has a steel floor frame which supports the rest of the stucture

the rust was just under the windows,in an area like a rub rail,there were other area lower on the side that looked like corrosion under the paint. other than that it was a good looking bus. by the way, the bus was from pacific grove area on the coast.

how you doing jim i will probably wait till the weather gets a little better we just got another 12inches of snow here i hate winter i dont know a lot about putting jakes on the 220 but i do know you have some special stuff to do if you put them on an 855 im sure you have done your research but make sure you talk to someone at cummins if you havent good luck and im green with envy

Howdy fellow Gillig and Crown fans

I'm really happy that these folks have opened up a page for all of us that love school buses and other HIGH QUALITY WELL BUILT equipment like Gilligs and Crowns.

I drive a 1970 Gillig with a 1160 CAT, and got a bunch more too. I use my buses to haul medical aid to Latin America and the Caribbean.

I've also dismantled three of them, so I know a lot about buses, especially Gilligs.

Anyone ever need advice or anything for a Crown or a gillig, just give me a yell.
