Has anyone used the DeLorme PC GPS ? It comes with streetmap software and I'm just wondering what other features it comes with. I'm looking for a unit that has speed over ground and some of the usual GPS data. Their website doesn't provide much technical information and I'm also looking for some unbiased feedback as to it's real usefullness.

I don't know about the DeLorme gps.

I use the Delorme street atlas usa software with a garmin eTrex gps. I like the eTrex because i can unplug it and carry it other places. Very functional unit for under $100.00

The street atlas software is nice as it will give you audible directions as you drive.

Hope this helps,

Travroute's Co-Pilot has all the stuff you are looking for and it's map database is all on one cd that can be transferred to your hard drive for increased speed. No swapping discs to plan a trip from coast to coast.

I use Delorme street atlas in all my vehicles including the airplane. I use their GPS and it works great. The whole package was $179 and came with a USB adapter for the GPS. The USB adapter provides data transfer and power to the GPS so there is no need for an external power supply for the GPS. It came with 2 CD's...One program CD and map CD. Once the program is installed, insert the map CD and thats it. It has all the data you would expect to see from a GPS like ground speed.

The map accuracy is very good. Even our small airport is mapped so accurately that when I use it in the plane I can taxi around the airport by watching the moving map. It does not display courese or heading, but I mostly use it for aerial mapping anyway. In a bus course and heading are meaningless anyway.

It also has a feature that allows you to draw on the map. You can draw in your house or anything else that is not on the map like any secondary roads that may not be mapped. I use the feature alot to add runway numbers and radio frequencies to the airports.

I've used several versions of Street Atlas including the latest. The original TripMate GPS is still working great however, I am going to upgrade to a Garmin for hiking, biking, etc.

I've worked with many GPS mapping systems aboard ship and find Street Atlas the best for over the road travliing and planning.

Delorme is the way to go. We have the latest Street Atlas on the laptop and a GPS 12XL. The neat thing is that you have a GPS for hikes and such when not using it in the bus. It will do everything from planning your route, telling you about restaurants, and gas, it will even download road delays and these are only a few of the features. It will give you exact speed and position to like a foot, correct me if I am wrong. It may be a little more but that is pretty good. It will even tell altitude. FUN!!! Hope this helps!!

I have the travel route 2000, uses the laptop screen, good visabilty, nice large screen and gives good direction. Traces your route as you go and can come up with alternate routes if yours is blocked. What I particulary like, is I can give verbal commands (within limits) and it will respond without fiddling with the computer. I won't travel with out it. Great product and the 2002 version has more updates. It would not disappoint you. cd

I have been using the DeLorme for many years, no complaints at all. Mine is such an old edition, I am waiting for some collector to snatch it up. In earlier days, I used it to find the library in strange towns so I could get my email as well as for speed and navagation. I also found I could even taxi with it in my plane, handy for finding those elusive turnoff spots sometimes.

Cory, I'm really dumb when it comes to these things, so be patient with me. Is the Travel Route 2000 a software program that you just loaded into your desktop computer? We have a bus we are converting and am very interested in one of these things to help with the traveling, it's nice that you can give verbal commands even if limited.
We need something that we can put on a big enough screen to see, our eyes are getting older.

Your comments will be appreciated.

I'm sure you have heard it said that there are no dumb questions, and in this room, that is particularly true.
- I have the TravelRoute 2000, now they are selling the 2002. They all are the same 'cepting for they have more info in the 2002.
- I get lost so easily that I had to get one of these to help me find the way home ;^)
- You get a satillite antenna, power cord, cord for the pc and cd disk.
- The slowest recommended PC is 300MHZ, the faster the better. Mine is 300MHZ and runs just fine. You load the software in the laptop via the CD. Connections on mine are through a serial port, the newer travel route I think comes with USB connections. The Antenna sits on your dash and plugs into the computer. You can use the cd for map access or you can use the laptops hard drive, which allows it to access the maps faster. Once you start the program it will ask you where you are going, It already knows where you are. just give it the info it prompts you for and it will create your route and maps. the map will fill the screen and will track your trail as you go. If you use the verbal commands, if your bus is really noisy, you need to use a headphone and mic. All commands are accessable by the computer keyboard or mouse. The only trouble I had with mine was it routed me onto a gravel road one time. So i told it to detour and it found another road for me.
- Verbal commands, one of which is go to sleep, that command will tell the computer to be quiet. Tell it to "WAKE UP" and it willagain alert you where to turn or streets to watch for your turns. It will verbally respond to ?MORE DETAIL" when you need to see more detail like street names or names of places, will show some camping areas, parks. "ZOOM IN" brings the map in closer to you, "ZOOM OUT" moves it away. "SPEED" will give you the rate of speed you are traveling. "HOW FAR" and he tells you the distance to the next turn or destination. "NEXT TURN" and he will tell you where the next turn will be make at. "WHERE AM I" and he tell you where you are on the map. There is also some kind of traking and recording in the program. It is so accurate that if the law pulls you over for speeding and you know you were doing the speed limit, you print this out and take it to court and it is acceptable evidence. I can't think of anything else right now but I am sure I have missed something. It can also print out the route includeing distance and times as well as printing out the maps. It is very handy in manyways. After some of the others tellyou how theres work, then you can compare and decide what you may want to use. Any more questions, let me know- cd
- It is good for finding places if you know the addresses, take you to the front door. If its a really well known place, it can sometimes recognise a name also. I have heard of folks having trouble seeing the laptop screen while traveling, I have never had that problem.

Hey, I like that speed proof, never thought of that.
If a laptop screen is too dim or hard to position as I found to be a problem with the older ones especially, you can get a 9 in tube type monitor as I did, it is like a small TV and they are used in grocery stores and banks mostly. Plenty bright, and any laptop will hook onto it with ease, in fact I have a spare if anyone is interested. That and an optical mouse is all you need to then "remote" the laptop or desktop PC. (you can also hook an optical pc camera to it and use it as a color back up monitor also!)

RJ, that software is available on eBay most of the time, along with other competing software. We bought both of our packages that way.
