So far I have only driven standards, however I will have the opportunity to drive a coach with an 8V92 and a 740 automatic coming up soon. Is there any shifting involved or do you simply put it in drive and go.

On the 60 footer New Flyer I had... It was an auto with an Allison 748 pushbutton. Part of the pre-trip was to roll forward in gear a minimum of 4 feet and then again in reverse the same distance... Of course, it helped that it was on a big plate clearly visible to the driver. ^.^

Drive and go; it's that easy. I could not get my bus to my house without the auto. My driveway (7/10 of a mile, very steep and twisty) would toast a clutch. Also it's much easier to back up, especially up a hill.

You may want to select the gears, if it starts banging back and forth between 2-3 or 3-4 at city/suburban speeds.

The 740 is prone to upshifting a gear too far under partial throttle, and then has to downshift if you require acceleration or your road speed drops a little.

It also waits too long to downshift as road speed drops for as smooth a shift as it will do at engine governed speed.

The good coachmen of that era used shifter positions 2-3-4. The transmission is allowed to make the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts, the driver chooses the rest, making the upshifts just before engine governed speed in each gear, and making the downshifts just slightly above engine governed speed for the next lower gear. Downshifts under throttle when climbing requires a momentary throttle lift and re-application at just the right moment during the downshift for a seamlessly smooth power delivery through the shift, this takes some practice to keep the champagne in the glass....

If you get the driveline to bang, or the heads of your passengers snapping to and fro, you got room for improvement.

happy coaching!

Ditto BW's comment.

Keeping the 740 in third when in traffic and around town (when
you don't expect to be going over 55mph), takes wear and tear
out of the rig, and you.

Oh...
And remember that there's no "park" position with these rigs.
If you get out and the back bumper goes by...... it already
had a 40' jump on you. You gotta' RUN, man!

well put bw ! fit for containment in a champagne glass or publishing in a operator's manual!
... and I shall add the bit about down shifting if the engine temperature is getting to high and rpm to low, this gives the cooling blower more speed and the entire cooling system higher potential capacity provided all is in good order.
