I'm not planning on needing heat for long periods of cold weather. What are my options for electric heat running off my 7k Onan generator. |

I'm installing 2 wall units from Home Depot. I've got 8KW worth of power in the genset that I bought mostly for running the AC units in the summer. Since I won't be running AC in the winter, might as well run electric heat. I also installed an LP furnace. The electric is for backup heat. Also...If you find yourself in a campground that allows electric heat, you can heat on thier dime instead of burning LP. Ross |

you can use heat strips in your roof air......however I would suggest looking ito webasto or espar diesel fired heater..... low elec draw and low fuel consuption about .5 gal an hour. have used mine in freezing temps and keeps the 04 warm to the point you can run around naked in it if you were so disposed to do such things. 1500.00 |

Check the Grainger book. They have wall mount and toe space mount electric heaters. There are also small (6" each dimension)portable cube heaters that put out 5K btu. Lots of options out there including electric baseboard. Jim |

Doug. Can you please elaborate on suppliers and pricing? $1500 seems way optimisitic, but I like that kind of thinking. |

$1500 will get you an Aquahot or Webasto diesel fired boiler. A properly installed complete heating system costs a bit more. The Aquahot system I priced included the boiler, 5 heat exchanger units. tubing and clamps. It was just under $5000. I went with LP forced hot air because of the cost of diesel fired heat. After pricing new units and talking to others who have done actual installations, I figured the cost of the boiler was at best half the cost of the complete system...and thats if I did some scrounging. If I were planning on extended trips in extreme cold, I may have made a different choice. Ross |

You dont have a load of heat from so few KW , so if your unit is WATER cooled , Co generation , circulating the genset cooling water thru a base board or toe kick would almost doubble the HEAT output into the coach. FAST FRED |

.5 gal per Hr. If you are in cold weather. 24 hrs. =12 gal 12 times 1.25 per gal= big bucks per day. Go with the gas cheaper to install cheaper to operate. |

I read a post from Cory Dane where he used the heat strips in his Air Con units and said it actually became uncomfortably warm when he left them run. I think the outside temp was 30's. If I remember right, this was in an RV, so goes to show, you dont need much insulation to try to heat the unit up a bit. He said something about making a schematic to put the heat strips on a thermostat using an electronic relay. Interesting thought. Quest |

The heat strips on my roof A/C's are controlled by the same thermostat that controls the cooling function. Once the main control is turned to heating, then as you turn the thermostat down (ccw) toward warmer, the heat strips come on and heat the coach. I only use mine if there is some problem with the Webasto, due to the audible noise of the blowers. Richard |

I got mine from the local Detroit dealer Penn Detroit......1500.00 for the whole kit, plus tax of course. .5 per gallon is only while buring...as with most heaters it is thermostatically controlled. that .5 gal/hr keeps the coach very warm.......and you don't have to fool with catalitic heaters, or propane.......the diesel is already there |
