Hi All,

I had C60 injectors and standard timing in a great running 8V71 in my MC8. Since I had to replace the transmission, I thought, change the injectors to N65's and advance the timing and voila' I'd have a 318. Clarke DDA in St. Louis said right on. They did both those items and replaced the idler bearings too. Now I have less power and a faint black haze. Sounds great, runs great, just more smoke on the climbs (not like a Mack though) and lots less power. I've had the blower gone over and a new spring kit added. I've put in new air filter. Had all the work done in St. Louis rechecked at a DDA in Philadelphia and all perfect. Checked fuel pump. Checked timing, and assured it is advanced. Checked all linkages. No smoke under no-load, except a bit of black when punching it. Starts good, just smokes (white) for about 5 seconds. There's just supposed to be two cams, standard and turbo? I have large hole liners. There are trunk pistons, not crossheads, but all say only a small difference in the placement of the firing ring. They had 318's with trunks too! What have I missed? Thanks for your replies.

Only thing that comes to mind is that you may still have the two piece turbo pistons which are lower compression than "N" pistons.

This would mismatch the N65's and the "A" timing resulting in the smoke and power loss. These pistons were designed for a turbo. Good luck.

The 318hp from a detroir diesel comes into play when it is installed straight in as in a truck. For GM buses with angle drive, the hp rating is always going to be lower.

Charles Seatons statement is blarny, horsepower is horsepower and an engine doesnt care what vehicle or position its in...Gearing on the other hand is very importand to get right and makes large differences in results.>>>Dan

Actually the book says it is 304hp not 318. I understand to get the 318 you have to set the govenor at 2500 rpm and the 318 doesn't start untill 2300 rpm

Ah geez guys....

There's more than one test method to measure horsepower and they often get mixed in with apples, oranges and other fruit....

On one test, an 8V71 will do 318 HP and on the other test, the same motor tests at 304 or whatever.

Get in here, engineer types, and give us the detailed skinny!

happy coaching!
