Hi folks,

Vista OS gurus needed:

David Evans is having problems accessing the results pages for the search function here on BNO. He states in an email to me that he has the Vista OS and that immediately throws up a red flag for me.

I have (and am currently using now) a new Acer laptop with Vista that had a roll-back option to XP Pro, which is what this computer uses now. I did so at the advice of my own computer guru because he said that Vista had some stability issues (that I think are all but gone in today's current version).

So, I can't personally offer David a lot of help except to say that I know Vista has some security levels built in that XP never had. To the computer nerds out there (and I'm proudly one of you!), might this be a security level in Vista that might be blocking a search on this site?

Thanks for your answers in advance.

Ian

I agree it is probably a local software block, but I no issues here with Vista...

I was using Norton Internet Security 2009 and had no problem with that.
I just switched to BitDefender Internet Security 2009 and still no issues.
Both of those suites change the "out of the box" security settings... I never tried the original settings to come here

Still getting familiar with vista (with Norton) on this new HP laptop (only four months later). Issues of conflict often come up and eventually get resolved by updates, rarely by my lack of skills & knowledge.
It seems that the main focus of vista is to get you to buy more for longer or something. Not impressed overall. Guess I will be not as unpleased when they no longer support XP .

I can access the BNO archives and search functions; although I am not certain what a proper function of this search is. It comes up with very broad results.

Microcrap has recently jumped on the security band wagon since it's the target of every hacker on the planet. This makes vista difficult and annoying to use at best. I think the problem is more with internet explorer than vista. Try using Firefox.... http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html I've been using it for over 3 years and have NEVER regretted it! More secure and you can also get add-ons to get rid of advertising, the annoying flash adds and more....

Can Dave offer some details of his system. I use Vista on many computers - different versions on each and havent had any issues on each. I would agree with the others that there might be a firewall of anti-virus program blocking things up. the seach page results are a program - CGI program that is... i would bet that in one of his security apps cgi's are being blocked... another thing we would need to know is if he is using internet explorer version 8. I had lots of issues on security sites with that and had to back down to version 7 in order to login to certain sites. Just my input. more details would help.

Hi Guy's,

I use Vista on all my comps now. I know, change stinks.....but, vista is much easier to use then XP once you get used to it.
So far, no issues with your search feature here.
You can try going into Start, then control panel,
then Internet options, then security.
At that point, you will see a security "Volume level bar" try and lower it one notch. If this does not help,
you could have conflicts with IE and trying Firefox may be the solution

Good Luck
Nick-

If you follow any of the real guru newsletters like Windows Secrets and others, you would realize that Microsoft is pushing hard to release Windows 7 and bury Vista and move on. Because of the slowness, bugs still after services releases, and compatibility issues.

All versions of Internet Explorer have had / still have security and stability issues. IE 8 is such a joke that Microsoft now designed a "one button" reversal to IE 7. As of last weeks news...

"Before you consider installing IE 8, make sure your Web applications support the new release. Microsoft's release notes indicate, for example, that Intuit's Turbo Tax Online tax service doesn't run under IE 8."

"If you installed the new version but are now having second thoughts, you'll find instructions for removing IE 8 in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 957700. This document includes a "Fix it for me" button that automates the uninstall process."

This may not be the cause of David Evans' problem, but it's a good place to start. Unfortunately, I dumped Vista from all my machines and replaced with XP Pro, otherwise this phenomena would be interesting to see.

A few years ago I had an almost identical problem in that I could access all web sites normally with the exception of certain pages of only two sites. I was running XP Pro. After several weeks of trying to pull hair that I don't have, the problem turned out to be the Linksys WRT55AG router. Totally different animal from the very popular WRT54G series.

I was running IP addressing on my home network as I had for years at work. I reverted to modified DHCP addressing on the Linksys and the problem vanished. Had several models of the same router. Recreated problem on other hardware using same parameters. No one ever had a clue why this occurred. Certainly Linksys did not. It's probably why they dropped the WRT55AG from manufacture a couple years ago -- just after I started using it.

David lives on Long Island and is getting old. He rants a lot
more these days, and Vista may be just an excuse to rant.

Uhh.. Dave? See if you can rollback IE8 to IE7.

I have XP sp3, and I unloaded the new IE for the older 7.
The blasted new versions of IE are total crapola.

Hey Ladies and Gents, I know I'm late to this party, but why don't you try Ubuntu Linux?
