so far i've thrown way way to much money down the rat hole.[$1500.]
mine can't be economically fixed _.rapped crank and harmonic. every time i get GOOD just BOLT IT UP parts form "reliable sources" they're _rap.
i'm at end of rope after 4 months. and less than no money left.
my kids really love this 04 as i do , but where do i go from here. the well ran dry. i've got nothing left to sell to fund this and it's worth nothing as it sits
anybody out there with a spare engine and a HUGE heart.
thanks for my moment of blubbering

Can't promise anything, I was offered one a couple months back for the taking and don't know if he still has it but will check it out, If he does,we will maybe get you going. What part of the country are you in?
Larry

ps; Just remember there is a lot more to running a bus - such as on the road problems, insurance, maintenance to keep it safe out on these highways. Not trying to discourage you but maybe if things are that tight, you would be better off selling it and waiting until times are better for you?
I realize that's a hard pill to swallow, but something to think on.

Dounan,
Lighten up! This is SUPOSED to be fun. You can't have less money than we do. Get smart with the $$. You said you have a friend with trucking connections...find a good reliable mechanic that will work on your bus for you (enginewise) That seems to be the biggest problem right now. A good mechanic may be able to find a wrecked truck engine to drop in your bus for low $$. Maybe you can do some trade-work for him. Or maybe pick up some odd jobs to help finance your bus. David picks up extra remodel jobs, usually tile installation, and sets the money aside for the bus or our old 8N tractor. Since we got the bus I have laid and grouted far more tile than I wanted. What can you do to make extra money? And you don't have to go top of the line with everything. I have a problem paying more for an AquaHot than what we paid for our bus! Anything that you can replace fairly easily later can be used. We canibalized my parents old camper for the range, fridge (even thought I want a Sunfrost RF19...later,later), toilet and a small holding tank (among other misc. parts). You can usually pick up travel trailer advertised as being "suitable for hunters" pretty cheap. Use the all the BBs for information. ASK! And look for the solution to the problem that fits your budget. Not everyone that has a bus conversion has lots of $$ and could afford to hire out everything. Get creative and use your imagination. Don't forget...some of these people have taken up to 7-10 years to convert their bus. We don't have that much time, unfortunately, our kids are already 16 (time flies). We are shooting for completion (livable) by next fall (I hope!).
Don't give up!

The advice from David & Lorna would be good to follow, just relax so you can think clearly and something will work out.
I went out and looked at that engine today, it would just add to your problems, it should be in the bottom of the river as an anchor. The pan is off and it was sitting on the ground, on an old piece of plywood which was rotted out so you can imagine what the rest is like.
Now I'm not going to give up, just hang in there and maybe we can find something.

Larry (and others) -

Don't forget, he needs a LH engine for his 4104.

You can't just pick up one from a truck boneyard - he'd end up with four speeds in reverse!

Good Luck!

Couldn't he use the stuff from his old engine to convert the truck Detroit to reverse-rotation?

RJ, the one I was offered was from a Bus. You are right though, there are a lot of engines around from these older trucks & one he needs ready to go is like the needle. For free or near free is that much harder.
That is a good point to make in case others want to help.
From the problems they are having I think he needs more than just internal parts. Those could be found easy enough, but by the time you get everything for LH and with his past experence I don't thing I would be doing him any favors. Sounds like it is likely in need of line bore and etc.
I hope who ever is helping him knows the difference between diesel knock and engine knock.

steve, i think that would require major changes in the installation. wouldn't it? rearend etc.?

to all, thanks for your input.
my frustration just perked over. tired of many trips down the garden path.
the original engine [reputed to have been rebuilt approx,20,000 ago] had been running smoothly ,virtually smokeless on the first 1500 miles or so then while climbing a grade in va. i started to loose power and the mirrors showed i was smoking badly . i pulled of at the first exit[ approx.a mile] clutch wouldn't dissengage, bus stalled . i got out an went to look ,much oil on the engine. i manually put trans in nuetral.and started engine from rear . there was a whole lotta shakin goin on . the veiw hole at fly wheel showed it was woobling mighty bad so i shut it down imediately. from that point the saga never gets much better.except my trucking friend let me use his landall and 97 'p-bilt'to rescue it from va. to ma. if i dropped a load off on the way. i digress i removed the engine cradle setup from the 04 ,2 flange bolts to drive shaft were gone 2 were loose .i unbolted the trans. and the flywheel clutch and all fell off to the ground.
all bolts there snapped only the pins had kept it somewhat in place. at the front of the engine the harmonic was loose enough to turn on the crankshaft by hand. there's the story ; what came first the chicken or the egg.i haven't pulled this crank yet ,figuring it's integrity is compromised. this being the beginning of the engine/crank search ---down the garden path i went
sorry lorna , i didn't mean to whine
