Just thought I would post this for all the Yanks out there that come to Florida! Nothing personal!

Yankee Couple

A Yankee couple was driving their RV across Florida and were nearing a town spelled Kissimee. They noted the strange spelling and tried to figure how to pronounce it - KISS-a-me; kis-A-me; kis-a-ME.

They grew more perplexed as they drove into the town. Since they were hungry, they pulled into a place to get something to eat. At the counter, the man said to the waitress:

"My wife and I can't seem to be able to figure out how to pronounce this place. Will you tell me where we are and say it very slowly so that I can understand."

The waitress looked at him and said:

"Buuurrrgerrr Kiiiinnnng."

Everyone I know says it "kis-SIM-me".

My grandmother lives there (actually, in St. Cloud). :)

And don't EVER call Boca Raton,

"The mouth of the Rat!

Even though it is the translation ,
(the inlet is twisting and very narrow)

the natives will get mad ,

There still busy looking for their Chads!

Kinda like giving yourself away as an Easterner when you says Los Angeles as "Loss ang ge LEES" rather than the proper "Loss ang ge LES."

Kinda like saying San Jose as "San Joe see" rather than the proper "San hose say".

The best one is the mashing of "Sacramento", which usually but not always ends up being "Sac ra ment tow" instead of the proper (inproper?) local

Misspronunication of which is "Sac ra men o" with no "Tees". Yea, California English is NOT the Queen's English. He he he, could be worse---we could be living on Vulcan. Thanks.

If you are truly a Bay Area native you say San-o-zay (San Jose) and Sack (Sac). I live in Vallejo which is pronounced Va-lay-o by the natives and Va-lay-ho by newcomers. And yes, "Frisco" is used by the natives despite the assertions of the elite.

And Bethlehem, in Pennsylvania is pronounced "Beth-lem" and Nazareth in PA is pronounced Naz-reth". Just the local slang making pronounciation a little easier.

BTW - Fred - where in FL are you a "naturalized Floridian".

There is a street in Sacramento named after the German poet Goethe (pronounced ger ta), but locals call it "go th". In New Orleans, the street named after the Greek philosopher Socrates, is known as "so-crates" to the locals. Actually there are several other streets there with ancient Greek names that are pronounced in equally phonetic ways.

How about La Jolla in San Diego. . . Pronounced La Hoy Ya - which is correct. The funny part is that it is spelled wrong. . . It should be 'La Joya' - The Jewell. . .

We used to call Yosemite "Yos a mite e" just to hear the resonse of the New York tourists.

Ever gone to a really nice resturant and say 'Vin rose e" instead of Vin Rose?

Or order "figit maggotts" instead of filet mignons? Yea, I know I can't spell either.

Being from Bakersfield CA, don't even get me started on speaking Okie. He he he.

Outsiders do not say Norfolk, Virginia correctly. Elvis Presley didn't say it right in his song. It isn't Nor Fork, it is Naw & the 'F'word. Being a native to Hampton Roads, I like to hear people try to say the street names here. Several Native American names. (Kecoughtan) {Kick-O-tan} is proper. Key-Cough-Ton is northerner (Powhatan) {Pow-owa-tan} Po-hat-an is not correct etc....
One time, visiting New York City, I met a young black lady fresh off the boat from London, England. When I heard her speak PERFECT Kings English, I must have looked like Little Nipper, the RCA dog. I'm use to bubba and or carribean English. I had to speak my VA/NC accent. She looked the same at me. Was a hoot! I tried to tell her where I was from. Mentioned Norfolk, VA-Beach, Hampton, Newport News. She did not know any of these places. When I mentioned Yorktown VA and Cornwallis, she knew Exactly where I lived.

You can always tell it's a tourist when they pronounce Toronto Tor-on-to instead of Trawna.
