Hi folks,

Over the last few weeks, I've been giving "content" a lot of thought. I've consulted with our (my) friend Buswarrior about this and together we think we have several answers to this question.

It started, probably over a cold one, when we were chatting one day about the saturation of this small hobby onto the internet. We agreed that the slower sales of Dave Galey's books and George Myers' "notes" and the Coach Builder's Bulletin (www.coach-builder.com) are, in part, due to the amount of information that both BNO's and Bus Conversions' bulletin board systems (www.busconversions.com/bbs) have accumulated over the years. Just about everything that one needs, or wants, to know about bus conversions can be researched at the two web sites.

Is there trouble in that? Probably not, we think. Because a lot of info is a good thing. The usual caveats have to be in place, of course, because not everything that's said is right. It's up to the viewer to take what's written and strip out fact from fiction.

But BW and I agree that the two major web sites are nearing an end to the mass dissemination of written technical information. This, we feel, is due to the fact that it all may have been said already. Our web sites are becoming social networks instead of major technical resources - and nothing wrong with that, except that it costs a lot of money to store the words "Happy Birthday" and "Happy Easter", by so many, over such a long time - 10 years in our case, on a web server. This is not said to trivialize these events or the people or religions to which they refer. We just don't want to see this, or any, web site dry up with information and not be responsive to the audience.

This web site owes its popularity to the fact that there was little or no info out there about our hobby. As this and BC's web sites have grown, conversely, print has almost gone the way of the dodo. I sympathize with MAK in that it must be such a considerable chore to fill a magazine with fresh content all the time when most of what can be written about already exists on either or both of these two web sites.

Small hobby + tons of info = saturation point. Good for the hobby - good for you. But the question remains...

What next?

So, let's hear some input from our viewers. Tell me what you'd like to see here on BNO. What would you like the site to have, that's missing from it now. Discuss anything from soup to nuts (no pun intended!)

BW and I came up with a few things that are currently in the works, but I want to see if we're thinking the way you're thinking.

Break the forum into sections; Bus brands, Electrical, plumbing, air systems, drivetrain. Have an off topic section for ranting, birthday wishes etc. Maybe a supporting vendor section with vendor specials? Strictly enforce the no politics in all forums, except off topic. Anyone that starts those personal flaming sessions gets warned, then banned for thirty days. Oh, and no more jumping up and down by Ian :-)

John's idea is good. There's no reason to archive the greetings and rantings; if they were categorized specifically, they could die off easier.

Ian,
Although new to the board as a contributor, I have spent the past six months reading, searching, and digesting hundreds, maybe thousands, of threads on every topic and this format is pretty hard to beat. It is an amazing mix of technical and personal opinion, and unlike any article in a book, you can get real feedback, instantly, about any topic. Unfortunatly for book people, the internet it is a far better way to communicate. Nobody set out to hurt publishers, and, you are very good about not publishing their "copyrighted" material, it's just that having instant feedback from so many people, with a "no question is dumb" attidude, is just a superior as a way of getting answers and opinions.
As for it not being as "technical", it still really is. People will usually do a search, but still thow-out a "what if" and see peoples opinions. Oils, fluids,equipment, suppliers, etc are constantly changing, so what is available today might not what might be in "Da Book" so the site keeps everything current.
Above that, you have created a community of very real people, getting together, planning trips, etc and that is just as important as the technical aspect in keeping this hobby going. I vividly remember a post where the advice was - use the bus NOW, even if it's not finished - such a rememberable point from a real Bus Nut! Had it not been for this site, I probably would not have taken on such a project, plain and simple. Your members have de-mistified owning a bus - there is help for just about any problem a click away.

So with that, "Happy Easter" Ian!

Ian,

First off, let me say again how much I (and, I am sure, the rest of the community) appreciate what you are doing for the community by hosting this board and the whole web site. I think many folks do not realize the amount of effort and computing resources that actually go into it.

The sheer volume of technical information that has been amassed here in the archives is a tremendous asset, but it is also overwhelming. And to access it in a meaningful way, one needs to have a modicum of computer-based-search skills, not necessarily a given for new visitors here.

If I had a nickle for every question that I have seen asked here for the nth time ('n' large), then answered anew without reference to the archives, I could buy myself a tank of fuel.

I would think that newcomers to the hobby and the site could be helped by organizing some of the massive archives into a "frequently asked questions" page. I would propose a format of, literally, a list of one-line questions, such as "How large a generator do I need?", where each question is a hot link directly to a relevant thread in the archives, or, in the case of several relevant and related threads, perhaps a properly formatted search query URL that would bring those threads up.

Such a FAQ mechanism would have the additional benefit of reducing the storage dedicated to future redundant answers to those frequent questions.

I know that combing the archives to put this together is a lot of time-consuming work; perhaps a call for volunteers could go out to propose questions and select answer threads for a moderator to add to the page.

Just my $0.02 contribution.

Overall this is an excellent forum. I hate to think where I would be with my 4104 without this and the MAK forums.

I think the reason for repeat questions is that the new busnuts obviously have questions new to them and maybe they can't always find them on Search.

I agree with John about the idea of categorizing subjects and we surely can do without all the politics. Politics irritates me and some are so bad I have to respond even though it is against my will to do so.

I belong to an Aeronca forum which has many categories and it works very well.

This forum should be about bus conversions, nothing more. This is a broad subject and needs nothing else.

I wouldn't worry about competing with publications because they just aren't the same. The forum is instantaneous and the pubs have tremendous lag time.

Amen! I thought our US Constitution demanded the separation
of BBS and State.

Aside from that, why fix what ain't broke? It's the mixture of
opinions that brought most of us here.

Having access to only one single opinion has never advanced
any hobby or undertaking. Some of the best ideas have come
from those without formal training, but who's experience had
been derived from hands-on, life experience.

I seriously doubt any open forum could survive for very long
without some rattling. It's difficult for many individuals to type
thoughts out. One misplaced comma can change the meaning
of the message and rile someone that might be sensitive to the
unintended issue.

You've kept a great BBS for quite awhile, I@n!

The only thing I'd suggest you add, is an address to send
donations to, to support the best Bus Board on the web.

The economy's tight, but a buck or two isn't going to kill anyone.
If someone desires to donate more, it'll be their choice to do so.
But an address for donations should be handy! (no paypal please)

As usual, I side with Sean.
One of my suggestions is best put in the form of a question: Where in the archives is there a topic titled "How the air system is involved in shutting down a bus engine?"

The next time the problem is posted "I started up my bus and it idled about 5 min and just died!" how is the poor poster going to know where to go and look for help?

Who is going to explain to him/her that the Skinner valve needs to be energized to be closed, and that the protection valve doesn't let air into the auxiliaries until the brake reservoirs are up to about 80 lbs? He/she won't understand that until one of us explains that the shutdown cylinder pushes the stop lever on the governor...

Catch 22 applies here, if a newcomer knew where to go in the archives, new posts would dwindle the same way as magazine sales!

At least a year ago, during a discussion of wiring and inverters, etc, DAYS after proper grounding methods had been clearly explained, someone [proudly] posted "I used a marine 3 pole connector for my 50 Amp shore power connector!" (It needs 4 poles)

By doing that, he spliced the ground and the neutral wires together in the whole campground, AND in his bus, both of which were/are extremely dangerous. I'm at a loss as to how we can defend people against themselves, but I offer the following.

Somehow leave the politics out, if somebody wants to rant, find a political board.
Unfortunately the high cost of posting hasn't deterred certain uninformed frustrated politicos?
Innuendo doesn't either!

Appoint some qualified committees/members to sort by brand and topic? (That'll be tough enough on its own, as there are electrical quirks peculiar to a brand.)

An interesting observation, a new nut with a 30+ year old new to him purchase inquired about Jake Brakes. He got an answer something like "it has run 30 odd years without them, drive it down the first hill carefully." Makes lots of sense, where's that in the archives?

Catch 22 again, if the answer were easy, you wouldn't be asking would you???

Do we appoint archive weeders, again by brand of ownership and/or qualification?

How about moderators (gulp, gasp, choke, ammendment) to cut down on the crap being archived?

Hi folks,

All good suggestions for the forum. That's fine, and thank you for all those suggestions, thusfar. It's not going anywhere and to be more succinct, it is staying put forever. Everyone has likely noticed that there are fewer and fewer new messages but my stats programme reports little change in viewership. I surmise that is because people are doing research.

That's the board. Now, does everyone know that this web site had a ton of other stuff on it? There are two other interactive areas, for example: A free classified ads section; a chat room has been on this site forever - in fact that's why this site was started; then there's a picture folio that identifies many buses in their original, before conversion, form. There's other stuff, as well.

The question was about those kinds of things. Other than the bulletin board system, what else do you go to the computer for, that might be incorporated into this site? What else would you like to see?

I don't know if we would run into copyright issues but scans of the various operator and maintenance manuals for our different buses and and engines even gensets would be a great resource for people who may not have gotten one with their coach. FWIW I have already scanned in the one for the FLX and converted it to pdf and I am more than willing to share.

...more sharing of links to anything bus related including "informative & entertaining" youtube like video's & web site links , weather like a real life lesson in safety ( as in a bus accident newstory) to technical videos links on every thing from welding right up to bus trekking, really any bus related story seem to contain relevant knowledge . Links do not take much room , and could have a delete/expired date based on how popular they prove to be.

....................................Most of all I would like to see all of the users of this site increase your budget by clicking on those BANNER ADS at the top, which pays the bills a dime at a time (or so). With a budget many possibilities open up. Maybe room for volunteer help for BNO if such should prove needed , this who things must place a considerable tax on your bussin time sir Ian. As traffic grow so does the budget potential and encouragement for further contribution. It would never all be told as there will always be room for more learning , inventing and escapades in the busnut centered universe.

One request I forgot, could we have a "Signature" feature where we can list our bus info with each post?

One of my frustration with questions is guys who don't give their bus model or location. These two bits of info could help a lot when giving answers.

Ian...first and foremost...... many, many thanx for this fine board. You, if not others, know how I feel about it and I have said so publicly for years. Without question this is one of the cleanest, well managed and informative boards that could be imagined, much less available...no matter the subject. The Internet is a big ugly, but beautiful place. This site ranks as one of the finest.

While I agree with much of what has been stated in the above posts, I question the implementation of "moderators, controllers, cops", or whatever the medium might be called. Moderators have a lot of potential "power"...which ultimately might be good....or harmful...to the overall objective of the bossnut.

I seldom read the "other board" anymore due to the policing remarks, comments and activities that I have noticed over the years. I don't recall ever personally being censored, deleted or called down....though perhaps I "squeaked" thru a time or two. :-) :-( Deleting messages by one or another who might be offended...(and speaking that for many others) seems to me like a remedy that should be the board "editor,s" responsibility (right) alone.

Folks obviously feel good about the board, otherwise they would not ask "fresh" questions. Many, BTW are not newcomers to this board. I would say that is a plus and is what is intended. On the othe hand, the logistics of maintaining a decade plus of rhetoric, fact or "rant" as some state, must be overwhelming and for certain burdensome. While repetition is involved in that process, I note with interest over the years, Fast Fred most always answers every "new" question, with only occasional reference to archives. Smart and most probably a "new twist" on what had been said previously stated.

All of which comes down to:

What about the possibility of letting a thread run it's course...then "cleaning it up". If folks want to rant...well it is all in the eye of the beholder....that could be dropped without change of fact re: buses. Yes, another logistics problem, but could lessen the ultimate burden(s).

I have other thoughts, but at the risk of "ranting", I'll pass on further comments. I respect everyone on this medium and where there have been disagreements in the past, they have all been "worked thru"....far as I know.

If you take a look at RV.NET, you will see that they handle alot of volume...

They are very catagorized and that seems to work very for them.
Alot of folks post to the main Class A section and then the mods move info to their direct catagorys.
I like that you can go directly to the Towing section and research or post without weeding through other stuff non related.

Ian, first I want to thank you too for this great sit, I really can't say how much I appperciate what you do here. My suggestion, if the 10 year is getting to be too much to handle, just delete the oldest material to what ever limit is approiate for you to continue doing what you do here. I like maney of the above ideas as well, ALSO THE DONATION ONE. I never had a hobby before I bought my bus and I love it. Thanks again Ian, Roger

New to the board. New first-bus owner. I thought searching the archives was just my lack of skill but the search will isolate each word. Took a while but I'm getting better. I still haven't found a fan-club for the H8H, local(Mobile Ala) support, or the big pile of used parts I know exist somewhere. I'm reluctant to ask about replacing the generator head with a 20k model, tell y'all I'm politically conservative, or say Happy Easter! I'll just go back to searching the thousands of pages of the most interesting reading on the Internet.

I am all for the social networking parts of both boards and I agree, for those of us who have been around for a few years, there is not much that is new on the tech side.

I wonder if there could be a self policing feature incorporated where the poster determines whether or not the post/thread should be archived or automatically deleted after a period of time.

We have to remember that unless a question is asked There is not much purpose for the board.

After the question has been asked, it is the job of each of us answer the question the best we can.

I for one do not care how many other times the question has been asked. This time when the question is asked someone else may answer and put another twist on the answer.

The board needs activity, lots of it.

I notice that when something "exciting " happens this board is hopping.

Breaking it up into groups for question asking slows down the board. However that said, Nick's referance to the RV forum is a good observation.

Alot of folks post to the main Class A section and then the mods move info to their direct catagorys.

This keeps the board active and you don't have to go all over the place to see what is "happening"

Now that I'm getting "old " or older Am I really sure that question was asked, Or better yet do I remember the answer.

I say ask away and the board will fly high.

PS: Coming from a person with only 133 posts a grain of salt is needed with my comments.:-)

It would be nice to, at least, require a person's state be listed in their description. A lot of posters don't list a thing. The "vote thing" could be deep sixed. The poster usually votes themself all the stars anyway and we all know what every poster thinks of themselves.:-).

The computer "knows." You can't vote on your own post, try it. It won't let you vote more than once either.

None of us are "old," we're just mature!
Whether we act like it is another thing...

Paso's got it, we were all newbies once, and a whole lot of us started before boards.

I agree with making at least the State a mandatory part of the registration, even the City without a ZIP code wouldn't give away SPAM type personal info.

Most of this doesn't need to be archived?

Hi All
Let me lament a little. A little over 4 years ago, I came across this board. I owned and had owned various motorhomes, but was always intrigued with the idea of a bus conversion. I had been by a dealer on 1-44 just west of Springfield hundreds of times seeing buses for sale. That plus this board moved me to sell my motorhome and start looking for a bus to convert.
I read all of the archives I could and still do a fair amount of that but I will tell you, many times they don't cover the specific nuiance, thus the questions. When that question is asked, wallah, more information, more experience in print and just one step closer to helping the next guy choose between a series of nuiances (read that as variables) so he can design the coach his way. As Fred says, "do it your way", but this helps to "do it your way". There are times when I don't know what it is I don't know until the answers come in, then I go, ahah!
I for one would like to see the political stuff go away. I have taken a person responsibility to not post any answer to any political post. All that seems to do is stir up hard feelings and create enemies where there should be friendships based on a common hobby. If the political thing must stay, put it into an area I don't have to even look at and then periodically dump it.
I don't post often, prefering to only post when I have hopefully good, potentially helpful information that is relivent to the topic. It would be good if others did the same.
I would like to see the board divided by subject as mentioned above but then appoint a moderator who has technical knowledge over that area to weed out the dangerously wrong information. I have ask questions in the past about things I don't know and gotten several answers that conflicted. I didn't move forward because I had no way of knowing who was right and who was wrong. Lest everyone think this is censorship, I don't mean opinion based answers but truely dangerous information.
At a time when business is hard for bus businesses, I could see an area on the board where bus businesses could "advertise" there latest widgets directly to the people who are looking for them.
Finally, the social aspect. I am, by nature, not a social person, so to me the social aspect of this board comes from the answers I read to questions not from this or that update on this or that persons issues/birthdays. Having said that, I realize "my" way is not the only way and that some people like the social thing. Fine, so, here again, put a social category up for folks who want to get a birthday wish, give a Merry Xmas, health update, etc.
Add another category, something like, "Latest Trips" where we can post our latest trip, how our trip went, what we saw, etc. I guess, the newest term for this is a blog, but a blog about our adventures. If we encountered a problem, how did we fix it to save the trip. Kind of like the mags version of "highway fixes".

Ian, just a quick thanks for all you folks do to make this board what it is. From the time I first started looking at busses and boards, this one was head and shoulders above the competition. I belong to the other ones, but for the most part find them too confusing and hard to maneuver. I wouldn't change too much as the mixed atmosphere is one of the thing that make this board so interesting. Personal issues, bus issues, conversion, politics, it's liable to be anything.Here,everyone at whatever level your at feels comfortable posting and asking questions and even putting in your two cents worth when you feel real confindent. No big changes please.

give john his centerfold in the form of a "hottest tips and stories" of the month section maybe? i love to read about peoples intresting discoveries even when they are totally irrelevant to what im searching for in the archives, like "put a wet papertowel under your coffee cup to keep it from sliding all over."

I really like the diversity of the main page and think the main A page that is sifterd through for the archives is a great idea but if its just you ian thats a lot of work and i would be down for a donation and some ad banner clicking.

if the archive was seperated into different sections that would definetly make research easier for i agree its hard to do sometimes.

I think the asking new questions thing is great, but refferences to the archives are also good as well. for me its best to see it done and said by as many people as possible!

I thinhk what you were asking for, ian, was something fresh to add to the site, but i agree that its great as is. perhaps maybe an upcoming events page where people can discuss meeting plans and arrangements for the events and shows? maybe? i personally am here for the info, but i can see the need to maintain the community as well

and just for the record...some of BusWarriors comments in the archives are soooo funny, i think they ARE worth the space. i love a good laugh now and then while im researching. EXCESSIVE birthday wishesand happy Xmas stuff is a little weak to save for ten years, but a quick "THANKS and happy easter IAN" cant hurt can it? ;-)

My suggestion is that you upgrade the forum software.

1) We really need to see who started the post.
2) We need to have an option to only look at the posts that have come in since we last visted
3) As someone mentioned, we need to be able to set up a signiture

Take a look at any forum today and they all have the features that I mention.

Ok I@n i'm back home from a GREAT Easter Weekend trip (in the bus) and have read what others have had to say. Me too!

One thing I WOULD like to see very much is:

a "START NEW TOPIC" button on the front page, AND on the TOP, not where you have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the entire list of postings! Having it where it can be seen might encourage others to start NEW topics!

That's my only gripe!

In your profile you should change your pic to the one of you in shorts and tie jumping up and down, nudge nudge wink wink say no more ;-) seriously about the archives do you realy need to save posts that are 10 years old maybe make the cut off at 4 years, because new people come to the forum with new solutions to problems, products and methods could have improved from those 10 years ago and even if some one asks a question to a problem that is in the archives it gets people talking and like I just said new ideas and better and easyer to use products could be available and talk'd about. There are also website software packages that put threads with new posts at the top. With the current software, say someone does a search for "WoopMobile Oil Filters". He finds a post from 2004 that says that the best place to get Woopmobile filters is FlyByNite Filters in Hoboken. So he clicks on their website, places an order and nothing -- then two weeks later, he tries to get the charge on his card reversed and his bank finds the place is bankrupt. So, he posts a "FlyByNite Filters is out of Business" post and it gets put in the 2004 posts ... with a little arrow next to it. And nobody sees it until somebody starts a *NEW* thread about "FlybyNite Filters".

If the old thread is moved to the top, everyone sees it. If there needs to be more discussion, it stays at the top. If not, it "descends". This works well. (See TDIClub.com)

IAN: First let me be one of VERY many bus nuts to thank you for all you do for us. I think the archives is needing to be catagarized[?} a little different,as, I need to find out where and how to do a specific job or diagnose a problem, the topics,faq, would be simpler, and then if more info was needed, go to the board and ask where to look or maybe will be answered there. I@n, Not much to add except I do agree with most that has been said. This is a no BS Forum and I like it. Keep up the good work. Only thing I think that needs mentioned again is adding our bus make model year and location to our signature. I would also like to see who started each thread, as others have mentioned. Start New Topic at the top of the page like Ace said, would be a big help. Other than that, it's a clean layout.

I really don't see the need for a moderator, unless you want one in hiding that can slap us once in a while when we overstep the line.

As far as people asking questions that have answers in the archives, I have no problem with that. with technology changing so rapidly, an answer found in the archive from a years or 2 ago may no linger be correct or applicable. 1. Move archive to a WIKI catagorized and references to the original posts.
2. Places to go and not to go mapize it. Google
push pins red for Not to go and green for the good places. (fairly easy) :-)
3. Leave this the way it is for current events (problems) and socializing.

hey just to follow up on my thought!! I want to take the bay doors and install shocks and eliminate the torsion system so they will be more convenient to operate. Now where would I go to obtain the info and specs to do that? My [one of them] is a 4905 jimmy. That is what I was refering to in previous post was info like that. Perhaps if the vote rating was automatically linked to some sort of archive filter, the life span of a post could be linked it's rating without the human effort. This might leave a few holes in the threads , with the deletion process , but it would save data storage space and speed up the search for relevant information in thy archives, in theory anyhow, provided it was employed wisely by the readers.

Ultimately more clicking of those advertisement banners at the top would provide increased revenue to allow unlimited archives and the possibility of immortalizing IAN's legacy, long after many of us have gone to the "wrecking yard for recycling". While a good coach may be refurbished forever, infrastructure & funds provided ; we busnuts , unfortunately will likely not. (no comment from the believers on this last fact please)

OK, I've been away from this thread for a few days, but I would like to respond to John, George, and others who suggest "mandating" that members include a state (or state and city) in their profiles.

Specifically, I would like to point out that some of us are, umm, "stateless." Oh, sure, I have a state where I am legally domiciled, and I have a 3"x5" mail box where I receive a minimal amount of US mail (both of those are the same state, BTW, but different cities -- there are no mailbox services in my legal domicile city). I also have a state, different from my domicile, where all my bills go.

But I see absolutely no value in listing either of those states in my profile -- it's not as if you could find me there. I think I have visited the physical location of my mailing address perhaps four times in five years, for less than five minutes each time. I have spent a total of four days in my "home" city in that time. I'd have to look it up to be certain, but I will guess that in those five years I have spent a total of perhaps five or six weeks even in my "home" state.

So I vote against requiring the listing of a city and/or state either in profiles or posts. We constantly have to battle this problem with people who don't understand RVers at all; the last place I want to have to battle it is on a forum dedicated to bus conversions (or any RVs, for that matter).

I agree with Sean that listing city/state or area should not be required, I think it should be highly recommend for those that do no travel full time. I think most of us operate from a home base. For all those that do operate from a home base, it can be very beneficial information. It does not have to be your exact address, just the area such as SW Florida helps, of course City/State does pinpoint your location a little closer. This can help when you need assistance as many of us know fellow busnuts all over this great country and may be able to put you in contact with a close by fellow busnut. Jack

I have had more than a few people from these bus boards send me either a personal message or email with satellite picture’s, GPS info etc of my home and bus.
Why, I don’t know. (I don’t answer)
They must have spent some time finding it, where if they just asked I would have given them the address.
So I guess if other busnuts can easily find me, (they also know when I’m out bussin) So can anyone else who can retrieve my info from the Internet.

Ian, I have one suggestion: Add an area for member's projects so that those who wish may share various parts of their conversions to what ever level they wish. This format can be very detailed and instructive and should add some start to finish type of organization to the forum as well as plenty of input from others. Each member should have the ability to start and manage their project index on their thread. Of course editing of other's posts should be left to the mods/admin as it is today.

How about a region. It is more of an interest, to me at least to see where the coaches are generally situated across the country. Just post your social security number then and we can have the IRS find you. OR go to a big rally and follow you home, OR go to a rally and check license plate, OR check your FMCA goose egg number and look it up in the annual issue, or take a picture of your coach and have satellite tracking program follow you to see where you live. I know that junk mail can find me no matter where I live. I think people in the witness protection program have their new and former picture and location listed on FINDTHEM.com.

Seriously, in an effort to have the bulletin board remain a strictly technical forum and to move the social aspects of our group to a separate place on the web site, would the idea of a "facebook"-like area be meaningful to anyone?

I'm thinking, some place to post your own blog, upload pictures of your bus, family, friends, rallies and other get-togethers, your bus projects, videos, somewhere where we could log our own special events, etc, etc.

Something I'd like to see... Active threads get bumped to the top when something is posted in them... This way, the active threads don't get 'forgotten' simply because you have to scroll through the entire listing just to see if they have a "New" icon next to them...

Most forum software works in this fashion... It'd be a nice change.

does everyone know how to use that "last day" and "last week" tab at the very bottom of the page?

Right from the start page of the BBS, scroll down to the bottom and click on whichever works for you.

I never go to the board proper, I use the tabs down there.

Someone can post to a topic that is far, far down on the list, the tabs bring it right there for you.

Yea BW! That's the way I've always done it!

I've started using Facebook recently and one good feature it has is it allows you to upload pics immediately and share them with your list of friends. Hmm, it DOES make you ALLOW who your friends are so you have the option of having them as a friend or not!
Anyone else on here using FB?

I didn't know about that either. maybe we just need a course in "using the board 101"! Any of my grandkids can run circles around me on a computer, but I could still do trig on a slide rule ( ok maybe not)

Ian,

First let me say you have a great looking and managed board. You keep it clean, organized, and operational. No simple feat. I see what my wife goes through creating/managing web sites.

That said, I have a couple comments. On the registration issue of city, state, email, etc., most sites will ask you for this information when you register. Some ask for more info, some less. The point is many sites give the new subscriber the option of having that information kept private (for the webmaster) or allowed onto the public section of the board. By a different mechanism, your site offers that option now.

I think the concerns over city and state non-listing are without merit. There are other bus folks that have contacted me because they realized I lived relatively close to them. And the reverse is true. It would be a shame to lose that ability. And you know, I haven't had any bus stalkers call my phone number or show up on my door step. If it's a concern to a poster, they currently have the option of not listing considerable information. But you need relevant information to maintain control over the board.

My other suggestion would be to put all navigation info on the top of the page, instead of the bottom. This makes it more apparent to users and far more convenient than scrolling to the bottom of a page just to view updated posts on a topic.

Another area I would expand on is Images, Attachments, and Clipart instructions. You have limited the size of upload .gif and .jpg files, the specific KB of which is not listed. Does the size vary between profile and post (see my question to you under the "Oops!" thread)? Expansion of graphic upload instructions, I feel, would be helpful to many, and possibly save you much time in responding to both public and private pleas for help in this area.

Another reason, I think, more graphics are not used is the hesitance to test while learning because it will become a permanent comment to a thread or sometimes a new thread. This can be an embarrassment to folks, hence it becomes a road block to many in enhancing their posts.

As I briefly mentioned in another post, we modify and tweak on our web sites, sometimes many iterations until we get it right. We use sub-domains, fake DNS lookup, etc. to accomplish this without the "public" viewing any interruption on the respective site. I would suggest a small "test" box in each BNO profile where a user could upload and/or manipulate photos or drawings, particularly .pdf files of the latter -- all of which would be seen only by the poster for content, looks, sizing, etc.; and would be deleted when they exit their profile.

Just my two cents on improvements to an already stellar forum.

I forgot to mention, the Datastorm users forum I belong to has a donation area. And several of our managed sites, both charitable and non, have PayPal donation links; all of which is totally voluntary. And the proceeds go to the site owner, not us.

Whether or not your advertising revenue supports your site adequately is your business. Whether or not a user wants to donate to your site is their choice. This is so on many sites I frequent. Particularly the better managed and productive sites that offer me relevant and useful information.

In hindsight, I would have much preferred the vBulletin software package, as it is much more customizable, but feature for feature, excluding the physical look of this bbs, the features are very similar.

Macgyver, a click of the mouse will bring each active thread to the top automatically. Trouble is, I do the archive manually and doing it your way makes it a near impossibility to do the archive. The answer, as has been pointed out, is the "Last Day" and "Last Week".

Ian, again thank you for this resource.

my only suggestion is the addition of a topic section on the front page where all of our Dinette plans and other technical plans and drawings could go. Not discussions like in the board but the actual plans and the like. let me know if you need a couple of bucks to pay for the storage space.

Thanks for the suggestion Craig. I have a new section of the web site that will accommodate that very idea. Pictures, blogs, videos, etc. I'm still tapping my finger on the table wondering whether or not to launch it. It will either change the face of the web site or sit there idle. Frankly, I think the internet sites which speak to our hobby will stagnate and disappear if they remain as they are, so I am thinking of ways to continue the interest. I'm tired of the faction that believes in the "if it ain't broke..." theory because we'd all be driving Ford Model T's if that were even slightly truthful. The fact is, people fear change and are instinctively uncomfortably with it. That was then, this is the future and I'm going to stay in tune and stay in touch. Just thinking for now. Soon maybe.

And speaking of the future, you will soon see some other new and innovative features coming up on BNO - all in an effort to capture modern technology, statistical predictions regarding internet users and use and new ways of doing things on the internet.

Meantime, thank you and all the others for wanting to support the web site by donations. Though I cannot express my thanks adequately for such generosity, I am not having any financial difficulties supporting the site. I have only used about a sixth of the space I have acquired for this web site. Logistics and finance are fine, thank you. And we are a certified Swine Flu free zone :-)

Ian, if you do put up a page for files and plans i would love to put up a copy of an old electrical binder i had scanned. My great grandfater's friend went to a Trade school back in 39' and i have his work binder. this book was hand written and it explains all things electrical. my favorite part about it was the binding. it is burgundy in color with the Coyne electrical school logo embosed and covered with gold leaf. the pages were attached much like the three ring binders of this day and age but the binding post are threaded brass sleeves that are screwed together. it is such an awesome book. i always go to it to get answers on electrical questions i have. Still spot on even if the book is 80 years old. It even has plans for building the tool used to wind coils for building gernerator heads. then it has plans for sizing and assembling the generator heads and wiring it for whatever speed you plan to spin it at.
