I posted this on the Mak board but thought I'd ask here as well... My '62 Crown has a Ross steering box (manual) that is "supposed" to be oil filled but it leaks out fairly quickly. It's a real messy job (no pun) to take it out and change the seals, assuming they are still even availiable... My thought was to pump it full of grease, theory being that even tho it wasn't designed for grease, it'd be better than being empty all the time.. comments? Cheers gary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

It cakes up and after a while the gears have little if any grease on them. I just finished cleaning one out, now you talk about a mess, you will have one if you want to then replace the seal. At Auto Zone I have bought "Trans X" which stops trans leak fast, and will work on most other seals (buy it in the quart can, not the plastic bottle, it is not the same). Now if that don't work, bite the bullet and replace the seal. You will be glad you did it right. |

Most seals are universal or by SAE standards, take it out very carefully and you should see a number on the metal part of the seal. Take that number to parts house and they should have it. |
