You can do it but you won't like it. The 6-71 can't afford the horsepower losses of an automatic. It turns a marginal performer into a real slug.

Garry Dean (Dean's Coach, Durham NC) (919)383-4780 can probably get you the right parts but I don't think he will do the work. He said he had done 4 of these changes and had 4 unhappy custo

A friend and did two, a few years ago. You couldn't pay me enough money to go back to the manual. I pull a 8000 lb trailer most of the time. The other post is correct it really slows you down on the hills. We had N 4 value 238 hp. engines. We have already repowered one to a 8V71 about 300 hp this one runs great. I am in the process of installing a 8V71TA about 370 hp. Bottom line it will work, but I do not think you will be happy with it. Also your fuel mileage will drop to about 6.25 to 7.00 at best. You are working your engine harder it adds to engine overheating. Alot of work cutting firewall and reinforcing it. The rear axle and a later model 3rd member have to be addressed to get an acceptable driveline alignment. I think there was more work fixing the axle that the tranny install. We made all of our adapters. Later I saw one with the proper factory adapter. Gary at Coach Services could tell you who did this install, it was from Fresno,CA. Maybe they would tell you what adapter they used or sell you the adapter. I would go for a 6V92/tranny complete package out of a transit with cradle, every nut, bolt and etc. you can get. The little stuff adds up fast. We have about $3,000 each not counting the tranny and we did all of the machine & mechanical work ourselves. We did not cut any corner we did it right.

I remember who did the install for the Fresno bus. It was Pedco the engine to transmission was a clean job. They cut up the firewall and etc. and did not reinforce it, terrible job here.
The only person that I talked that was happy was Bernie Bernhart about 3 years ago his personnal bus was a turbo 671. Do not know what hp. he was putting out std. is 275 and some are souped up to 300, but engine life suffers. More hp. larger cooling system needed. I figured the cost to do the 671 turbo right. I found I could do an engine exchange for similiar money with the new engine completely overhauled. This all based on me doing 100% of the labor. I would end up with about 95 more hp than the Turbo 671. It is more work to do the engine swap, but I will never be sorry later. Hope this is of help.
