Uh-oh, I hear the faint footsteps of the Adoption Bug . . ! ;) I'm of the opinion that the Scenicruiser is the most beautiful coach ever built. Definitely worth saving. |

Walked around the coach a little while ago; it is all original. has all of the seats and all of the glass. I have pictures but not sure how to get them on the board. The guy that bought it originally planned to start a tour company and take people around using the bus but he did not. so the bus is not technically in the scrap yard, he owns the yard and keeps it there with several other large vehicles. he straight up asked 5 grand for it and said it would start right up (don't they all) recommended the air brake actuators be replaced. the floor was solid all the way arround until i got to the back where the upper seals on the windows had fallen in so i am certain it leaks. has the original bathroom up front and all of the dash is in tact. there was a fine covering of silt on everything that must be protecting it from the damaging ultraviolet rays. it was great to see but i know i cant rescue it i am tied down to my 4104. now the funny thing is that the owner said it would drive right out. i cant see how, if you notice on all of the pictures (once i get them posted) i am standing above the bus. it is setting in a pit of sorts. there is earth pushed up around it on 3 sides and several connex containers stacked behind it. listen if you all want me to pursue this further i will get his contact info and post it and i can put in some leg work on this. I know there is some serious interest in this model just based by how the board reacted to Redbull using all of your resources to get theirs put together and then they did not offer any of the parts left over to Senic cruiser owners. Now for the specifics. the door has been left open for ever and it still works from the handle at the drivers position. the right front wind shield has a soft ball sized hole in it. the bus looks like a Virginia creeper plant on the front and the driver side but i did not see the vine in the inside of the bus. hey , i just got off the phone on a stressful family member and her issues so my mind is distracted. i will leave the vin for your information PD4501 706 it is a 1955 |

i am waiting on the pictures at this point. i used my coworkers camera while we were out "working" today. the settings on the camera were for 8 mega pixels so the file came out huge (25 megs). this is off topic but i really love my job, i spent 8 hours getting four 2 gang low voltage electrical boxes. in those 8 hours i went and found a scenic cruiser, reunited my partner with his family since we were in the neighborhood ( had not seen them in 8 years because he was too busy he claims {i will chastise him about that for a couple of years}) and i also found a 4905 not to far down the road from the scenic cruiser and all the while i was driving some of the most beautiful country south east Virginia has to offer. Not bad for a days work. now if i could just get some of the stuff they pay me to do done it would be perfect ;) |

Man, i am involved in everything. the only way it would work in nuke mode is if we were to get an electric bus and run it of of a couple of those nuclear generator packs like the units installed in satelites. we hear about these units every so often out here with wallops island being right up the bay from us. they launch rockets nearly every week but every so often there is a large payload going up like a KH replacement bird labeled as an earth scanning topographer or some other giant package that has to be powered by a nuclear gen pack and green peace and Audubon society start trying to get the launch canceled saying what if the rocket explodes???? we will have glowing uranium all over the eastern shore!!!! rockets go up and then there is no more news about nuclear powered satellites. happens on average about every three years. well if one blows up i will collect the gen pack and keep it for Chessie's Cyclops! i will see if i can dig up any info on these gen packs. they have been around for decades, heck we even lost one in the mountains of china years ago during the cold war. maybe the naval nuclear instructor that lives upstairs can give me some more info. ah well. anybody want me to go get that bus? i really want to post the pictures but my partner did not post them to our server and he is camping. I will stay on him all weekend until i get therm up here. does anyone have any questions about it that maybe i can answer while the excitement is still fresh in my head? |

ah the big bus, just look beyond the boring korny script & focus your make believe on the coach. As for the nuc power, based on fact, ford/ge created the "nuclemobile" as a joint effort spin off when they were testing nuclear powered B-36 bombers. I saw the black & white film of the "nuclemobile" passenger car with mine own eyes, although I was half asleep at the time. I suspect the diesel $$$ saved would not be big enough to offset the cost of disposing of your waste U-235; unless you sold it to the munition manufactures for disposal in the next invasion/decimation genocide campaign enacted on foreign soils, seem to be the accepted trend these days with your nuc waste. |

....now this is a really big bus at about 3:30 minutes in this video clip of a euro-bus show at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6Z7Z-Hp5G4&feature=related not sure who made it, or if it is in production or was just a prototype. looks to be 100 feet long in 3 sections. Great shots craig; I think that the engine is a 8-v 71 in it, instead of the two 4-71's. That is why they put the 8-v in them because they could't keep the two running exactly together. Now if you buy this, don't worry about fixing er up! All it will take is $$$$$. DID the gut say it would fire right up and drive?? Check it out just a little further LOL. Still love the pics Gomer |

Craig Nice work on the photos. Reporting old company names off the side, and old registration card info helps me document this one for my list. Did you notice the individual AM radios above each seat in your photos? Not many Scenics had those, just east coast area buses. Also the original radio antenea base is visible on the lower roof in one of your photos. My 1001 has the radios still. The twin diesel fours were removed in 1961/1962 during a massive rebuilding of the remaining 982 Scenics.(give or take) Did you get my private email? Thanks, Tom McNally |

Here is the GH fleet history for 706. PD4501-706 Eastern Greyhound Lines E-5597 Eastern Greyhound Lines 4431 The radios are visible in your photo with the caption: "look at the view". Photo shows upstairs with skylight trim hanging down. If you look at the botttom of the overhead purse racks you will see the radios above each seat. (small rectangle chrome bezels in pairs) Craig can you email that info then? Thanks, Tom McNally |

Interesting history concerning the power plant initally installed in the PD4501's. The 2 4-71's (150 hp each) were connected with a fluid coupling. they had a 3 spd transmission with a 2 speed clutch (planetary gear set in the clutch) to the drive axle. The 4501 has always had a rear dual tired tag axle. The engine gov. had 2 speed settings, the lower was for top gear only - but some drivers figgured out how to defeat that & could hit 100 mph! The 8v71 was not available until the 60's. Greyhound had a big lawsuit with GM over the reliability of the twin 4 setup. Marmon-Herrington was awarded the contract to repower all of the surviving 4501's in the early 60's. This was done at the same time as the 'rebuild' Tom mentioned. Looks like this bus is a very good canidate for restoration to a full seated coach. If I could only find that lottery ticket . . . . |

I'm pretty sure that that 2 speed wet clutch was also used in some 4104's as the Hydrashift option. It gave an overdrive in each gear. They would run about 90 plus at 2300. From my experience, the wet clutch in the 4905 looks like the discs for direct in that Hydrashift. I'll bet most of those other parts were early Allison auto trans components. |
