Would someone explain (and how to tell)the difference between "Stud Mount" and "Hub Mount" wheels? |

Hi Chuck Hub piloted wheels rely on the contact surface between the wheel and a matched surface of the hub for their load carrying capacity. The wheel nuts just clamp the wheel or dual wheels to the hub. If you look a stud piloted wheels, you will find the inner hole on the wheel does not always match the outer diameter of the hub and that inner dual wheels use a combination stud and nut that threads over the studs on the rear hub. These have a taper that locates the inner wheel and front and outer duals use a conventional looking wheel nut again with a tapered inner surface that both centers and clamps the wheels. Most older vehicles that bus converters deal with are likely going to be stud piloted. Regards Emery 1958 MCI 96 |

If you go to: http://www.alcoawheels.com/maint/service/index.asp you can download the service manual for Alcoa truck, trailer and bus wheels. This has alot of good information about bus wheels and wheel safety including hub piloted and stud piloted mounting systems. Doug |
