I have a MC-7 that I just put a 8V-71T and a RTO in and I am happy with it but..... I have a new 740 complete just rebuilt and will be having my ankle fused in a few weeks so no clutching for me for 3 months. Does anyone know of someone that can make the swap and some one that wants to upgrade to a RTO with a new clutch setup? I am in So Cal area.

Hey Larry. I too have a very weak ankle, left over from a loosing battle with a car when I was a kid. I have a 4104 and the workout with the clutch is tough so I have been trying to understand pnuematic assist to make it less of a stress. Not simple - wish I had an automatic just for that reason! Good luck, and do what the Dr says! Do you suppose the conversion could be a medical expense...

Thanks for your replies and Glen the engine is a turbo motor that I had rebuild and made 342 hp on the dyno, wish it was inner cooled 400. The RTO is a 10 speed and is .8 in overdrive. I have 11R24.5 tires and it will run faster then you want to ride in it. I like the setup but I have a chance to get this 740 and if it doesn't work out for the change I will be happy anyway.

When you do the switch use a air cooler for the trans, my switch is soon in process from 8-71/740auto to 8-71T that does not have the oil cooler on engine for auto trans, so air is easy and simple. Also the cost and not having that heat in the rads. If you were in Pa. the shop that will be doing mine does this stuff, also shop rate is low $$.

I had my 13 spd to Allison HT740 switch done at Pedco in Santa Fe Springs, Ca. They are one of the few shops that I've run into that does work the way I would do it. After the installation, there was nothing I needed to do to it. The labor with air to oil cooler and installing the remote oil filter was about $6,000.00. Pricey, but I'm very pleased. Good Luck, TomC

You know, you could get one of those auto shift Roadrangers; one you have to use the clutch to start out, the other one the clutch is electronically controlled; no clutch pedal necessary. Since you already have one, the adapting would be minimal. Or you could put an air clutch on what you have to lighten the pedal effort. Going from that Roadranger to an auto with no overdrive is going to be a real eyeopener in fuel consumption increase. 3 to 4 miles to the gallon possible.

Forgive my ignorance, but when installing Fuller RoadRanger transmission, is the shift pattern the same or reversed?

For shift pattern, it depends on what shift linkages you have, and how you adapt them to the transmission in question.

There are quite a few busnut installs that are shifting "backwards", but if that's your ride, you'll get used to it in a hurry!

Integrating some aspects of cab-over shift linkages to get the pattern "straightened out" have been successfully employed in some installs.

happy coaching!

There is a remote shifter accessory version available that uses heavy Morse cables from slave to master controller to take care of that problem.

Mine is backwards, but if you have never driven one the other way then it's forward. I only use the clutch to start anyway and the milage at 33,000 lbs pulling a 4,500 lb toad is 8+ mpg.

So when using the remote shifter accessory with Morse cables...is there still "feel" when shifting, or is it the shove it and go?

What about the COE shift tower...any better for feel?

The feel is pretty much the same unless the cables aren't secured properly. Does give more flexibility in installation, plus, shift pattern can be opposite if desired. These cables are used for PTO and clutch controls in many applications, plus other uses and don't feel springy in those.

Okay, so if I wanted to squirel away (sorry, archive) information on shift towers, manual trans set-ups etc, where is a good source? Transmissions I know, shift towers and asst. stuff to to avoid backasswards shift pattern I don't.

I used a 5 speed tower and rod with bearings, ran it down the center along with the air line, pyro and Jake wires. Covered the tunnel and made the floor level and made a insulated box under the bed for the turbo. I also had to make some changes to the clutch linkage and used a reducer on the bell housing

It's the answer I gave you, all the shifting parts are from a 72 Prevo.
