I need some ideas from fellow busnuts on the easiest and cheapest way to install a fuel gauge. Easiest i mean without taking tank out. The bus is a 1963 4106. Thanks for all your thoughts.

Jim; I installed a sending unit in an 04 and it was not the easiest, but being that I am small in size, I was able to squeeze a little ways over the tank and take off the plate and when I went to put the unit in, after measuting and setting the float, I had to bend the arm in order to get it to go in and then after that I straightned it out again and fastened it down and ran the wire to the dash put the gauge in and wired the power and light up and bingo It worked whew I am glad that I am not FAT LOL or I couldn't have done it. It is well worth the time. Now some of the coaches have a plate in the floor at the fuel tank which will allow you to take it off and install the unit from the top. I also have a 4905 that has that plate just over the tank for that reason. Enjoy.

I would like to know how to install one on an mci8. It has a low fuel idiot light but i dont know if it works or not. If there is an idiot light and it works, would a person somehow be able to wire into that?? Just a thought.

You are laughing, Bill.

On the MC8, you see that bolted-on access panel on the side of the tank beside the fuel filler? The sending unit bolts in there, you just have to run a wire to the dashboard and get the gauge. Both the sender and the gauge available from MCI, or source your own locally. Be careful of the voltage for the gauge, has to match the rest of your set-up.

If the low fuel idiot light comes on in a coach of that vintage, you are perilously close to deep trouble.

happy coaching!

That was awsome info. I saw that that was a probably the place it would be done but just wanted to make sure. I have been adding 5gal per week of fresh fuel until i am operational inside. You Know, all plumbing..heating so on so forth. That way i dont have to blow a big wad when we are ready to go.

It depends on the finish level in your coach. On my 4104, I cut a hole in the floor to install a fuel sender. Without that option, you are pretty much reduced to pulling the tank.

It looks like these people could hook you up with an easy install system.

Jim...are you real sure there is no access port from the floor? I f you have a covering of some type, lino, tile, whatever, there may indeed be some access under that.

If so should be very easy to "add" a pickup...sure was on mine. (Crown Highway Coach 1964)
