Here is a bit of repower advice for 2 strokes from Wagonmaster at Schoolbus Fleet Magazine Forum: "An older (1970's) 6-71N can benefit from installation of a turbo and brown tip C-70 injectors. If you have a really good cooling system, might get away with 75 injectors for WAY more power when you need it,but you'll get some black smoke with either under hard acceleration. The 65 is the standard size for most 6-71N engines.
6V92 engines can benefit from 9B90 injectors and turning up RPM to full rated RPM (usually 2150). Most bus engines used 7B70 injectors and were rated at approx. 270 hp at approx. 1850-1900 RPM. The injector and RPM change alone will bring it to full 335 hp, the truck rating. We did this to several Eagle model 10 units in the mid 80's and fuel economy and power BOTH improved dramatically! If you can afford an intercooler they are always great for adding painless horsepower and economy! If you're looking for cleaner, only, there isn't much out there because even DD couldn't bring them into line with 1988 emissions levels and that's why they went with the series 50 and series 60 engines at that time (1987) and abandoned the two strokes. Sad, because when "right" they are real workhorses!!
Hope some of this helps!"

Doug
I will keep this info on file for others. I run DDEC IV on a 6V92TA with 277hp at 2110. I wish there was a way to increase it but the programs are for 277hp only.

Doug,
Sure appreciate the great DD info. I am wondering if I am in the minority of bus owners who want to live life in the "slow lane". For 30 years I have pounded semi's up and down from coast to coast and from northern Canada to Mexico. Always trying to beat the clock and the DOT, running as hard as was humanly possible. I told the wife when we get this bus done and "hit the road" I am not going to be in a hurry to get anywhere. I don't care if it takes me 2 hours to climb a hill as long as it can be done safely and without breakdowns. I guess I am looking forward to life with a 6V71N and watching the rest of the world zoom on by.

Wonder where I ca get a copy of the School bus Fleet Magazine Forum. I need to confirm a few things to repower my mechanical 6V92 @ 277 HP. 1. Does it matter if I have the California cams? 2. Can I use the existing turbo? 3. Intercooler, Do I have one? 4. What about my engine block serial number? Can it handle the added stress?
I already know about the injectors and larger radiator. What conderns me is the intercooler, is it internal to the engine block?

John,

I'm with you, I have a lot of fun with my 671 in the slow lane and don't like schedules. See the country is my motto.

I'm continually amused at all this high horsepower and 80 mph cruising talk!!

Me Too! Only ours is an 871. I like to drive at a safe and sensible speed, 60-65 is great for me. Going any faster just increases the pucker factor. I get better mpg, and get to see this great country. Besides if I had a blowout going any faster it wouldn't be pretty.

Bill, here in the states we can down load both the 6V92 coach 350 HP and coach 450 HP settings for a couple hundred bucks. I would have done the 450, but mine runs so good with the 350 that I'm happy. Shop told me if I do the 450 and I don't change the air box it could run hot. Threw the muffler away, so don't have an air box problem in my mind, cause I would run a pyro and just back out of it. I have DDEC 2 and I don't know about later versions, but my engine has the clean deal cams etc. that NJT used, also with a catalytic converter. Runs good.

Guys, one good thing about a high HP engine you can slow down.I make the trip across Texas at least 3 times a year and from El Paso to Junction is 450 miles of nothing so I go, nothing to see in that part of Texas good luck

Larry;, Is that a Johnson-Matthey catalytic converter on your bus. They used Clean cam Technology Systems camshafts in those engines, They flatten out the tq curve to give a better pull through out the rpm range.

Boy, do I agree with John and Barb. The 5C came standard with a 6V-71, but my old wagon has the 8V-71 (for whaever reason)... and it's all I'll ever need. Climbs long grades at 40-45 mph and cruises at 65 mph (clocked) @ 1850 RPM. Pushed it once (or twice) and clocked 80+... but that exceeded my 2150 gov and I'll never do it again (sure was fun though!).

Slow and easy, that's my motto [of course - considering my lurching progress across this great land of ours (yours) - some might say that's a motto bred of necessity].

Be that as it may, I dig the 4 esses: Slow, Scenery, Serenity and frequent Stops. And there's one other which I'm not at liberty to mention.

I'm sitting here with my first cup of coffee and can't figure out the last sentence. "And there's one other which I'm not at liberty to mention." I'm not even going to guess on that one, so what is it? I like the 4 esses, is there a fifth?

Can you at least give us a hint? I'll wonder what it is all day! ;)

Oh dear, has it been so long that some have even forgotten the word?

There's another song in here, "never mind doing it, I'm longing for the days when I could remember what it is that I used to, won't, can't, ....?"

MC5C came with the 8V71 with the 4 speed stick shift, and typically the 6V71 with an automatic, for those fleets that wanted them.

The bigger auto wouldn't fit behind the V8, bumper to drop box.

The original coach drive line design pre-dates the idea of using automatic transmissions in highway coaches, so everything was crammed in there as small as possible with the shorter manual transmission.

happy coaching!

Larry
I have a 350hp program for a LH 6V92TA but it is for DDEC II. Mine is a DDEC IV and DD says no more HP will be given to me. Isn't that nice of them. I was even going to downgrade to DDEC II to do it but too much work to rewire the computer. I have a DDEC II computer just sitting there so maybe someday when I have nothing to do.

When I got my transit, I changed the 8V-71N to brown tag N65 injectors (300hp and 800lb/ft torque) and 4.56 rear end ratio. This was fine until I got up in altitude where the engine lost power, smoked, and got worse fuel mileage (sometimes in the 4's)-which I couldn't live with. I had Don Fairchild upgrade the engine with 9G75's, bypass blower valve, and air to air intercooler for 375hp and 1125lb/ft torque. Now I get no smoke at altitude, the hills are more flat, and get in the 5-6mpg all the time. Really wakes up the 71 series to turbocharge it. Good Luck, TomC

Did I mention that my slow-poke 671 with 4sp gets 8mpg minimum in the mountains and 10.5 on the flats?

Gus what RPM are you spinning to get hose fuel numbers? Just curious where the sweet spot is on the 6-71
