Well we ventured out on a little road trip. Our first one was last fall and was only about 150 miles. Well we decided to go over this past week-end. We headed out saturday morning and headed down to Grand Forks N.D. Everything seemed to work well. First time we have actually used the bus so it was nice that everything we have done actually works. Also it was good to get out and see some of the weak points such as the TV moving around a bit. etc. I have never put any miles on so we were quite nervous. Spent all this money fixing it up and I was so scared we'd get out on the road and it would leave us on the side of the road. How would I be able to calm my bride down , haha I know I can fix the bus but it might take awhile. Well all of my worrrys were in vain, thank goodness. The old girl ran like a top. Put over 500 miles on and the only problem we had was the air dryer. The purge valve just kept letting air past it. While my wife was making supper I just took the purge valve off, cleaned it and put it back together and it was good. I think I will just update the dryer. Didn't use ANY oil and didn't blow any seals. I was somewhat worried about wheel seals as the unit has been sitting for quite some time, none of them even ran warm and I sure didn't baby it. It's all good.

Congratulations Grant! I still have a way to go before our first adventure ( other than driving it home). Glad things went well for ya.

I am glad you had a succesful trip it's great that first run. I know I had a good time driving mine from Ottawa to Sarnia last fall floated down the 401 and 402 like a caddy 65 mph all the way with more pedal to spare!
Grant would you mind if I stopped in if I go to Thresherman's this summer?

Before you finally service the wheel bearings , get the seals , and replace them at the same time.

Little more time and money , and a load of piece of mind.

how do you know when wheel bearing and seals need replacing?

I noticed (after several thousand miles) that the front wheel bearing oil was very low (it has a little metal cap on the indicator window, didn't know I had to check it) I had some uneven wear showing up on the tires, but I don't have any visible leaks.

When you add oil, you do not fill to the bottom of the opening. You fill to the embossed ring that says "FULL". Any leaks will usually be on the back side, putting oil on the brake linings. If everything is dry, maybe they never got filled completely? Have you jacked up the wheel and checked for excessive movement in the bearings? Uneven tire wear could also be caused by a tire balance, alignment, tire inflation pressure, or worn shock problem as well. Jack

Dave, by all means look us up if your coming out this way. There's a good chance well be camped up there for a day or two anyway. I usually put my 55 ford pick up in the car show, and work the beer gardens friday night. Volenteers are getting harder to find. My cell # is 2048711085

the indicator has a minimum level, and another line below the lip of the filler window which I assume was the full level. the oil was well below minimum.

I filled it to the full line with synthetic, and there is no visible leaks in back.

and no, I never jacked up the bus, I have healthy fear of it crashing down on me *L*

Congrats on a great first trip. It takes many many good trips to make up to the missus for one bad one. Especially the first. Kinda like "you never get a second chance to make a first impression." Have many more happy trips.

Grant I will give you a ring closer to the date and have a beer with you or two :-) MB Hwy's Dept. uses a lubraplate product it comes in 5 gallon pails kinda looks like thick hand cream and you pump it in with a pail pump. You dont get leaking hub seals and the bearings run cool. If you know Rick Gluki in Stonewall you could call him and ask what the name of it is.

Regarding the axle seals and when to change them:

If you don't know their age, change them.

Once they start leaking, the lube ends up on your brakes, then you get to decipher the debate over what to do then!

If you avoid a lube leak on your brakes through preventive maintenance, you get to watch the fight, instead of be in it.

happy coaching!

Good advice BW, I will get to them as soon as I get down my list of preventative maintenance. These buses have a huge list of things that need to be looked at when one doesn't know too much history.
