Does anyone have a copy of the NFPA 1192 code on PDF format or on CD... I'd like to look at it... Is it written to be understood by the general public or only by techs? Why do all these publications have to cost so much?:-). It seems like a good Conversion library will cost as much as the bus (atleast my rts). keith@myappraiser.org

Sorry..one additional question... For a newbee.. If you were to buy one guide to help you plan and build your electrical system, which would it be? Is there one definitive guide? Does Dave Galey's book go into great detail?

What's everyone's opinion (oops) on what books are worth the money for conversions and which were ok, but not really worth the price?

Keith -

IMHO, I think the best twenty bucks you can spend BEFORE you buy your bus is for a copy of "Beginner's Guide to Converted Coaches", by Larry Plachno, the publisher of National Bus Trader, an industry magazine.

Available either thru Amazon or direct from NBT at www.busmag.com

It's not specific (put bolt "a" thru hole "c" and tighten with nut "b"), but will give you good guidelines about the project's complexity and your involvement.

Read it cover-to-cover at LEAST twice, making copious notes about the thoughts it raises within you, BEFORE you go shell shopping.

This is a good example of how spending a little can save you thousands - both in time and $$$$.

If you've already bought a shell, read it anyway. Might open your eyes to some things you weren't already aware of. . .

Keith,

I bought a copy of George Myer's "Designing Electrical Circuits", and have read it several times. It covers all the main topics.

Also, I don't think you should even think about planning your electrical system without a copy of the NEC. And you may even want to purchase one of those "layman's guides" that go along with it and explain the code.

There are a number of 12V books from the guys at Ample Power that are great. And there's some good stuff on the Ample Power web site as well.

Another good title on 12V is "Managing 12 volts".

And a regular house wiring book will cover alot of the basics on 120V circuits, wiring, switches, lights, and outlets, etc.

That oughta keep ya busy for a while! Yes, it gets expensive, but unless you've been doing this stuff for years, there's a lot of material to learn about, and your (and your neighbor's) safety depend on getting it right.

I have George Myer's book on designing electrical circuits for bus conversions and it is excellent. In my opinion he gives enough information for you to be able to wire your bus without problems. Galey's Bible isn't as thorough on electrical, but it also helps. Plachno's book is good for an overview on convertions, but is getting old and definitely lacking in detail. Since you are looking at an RTS I should warn you that Plachno leans towards professional conversions and his thinking on transit conversions is out of date, or at least made with blinders on to the modern transits now available. Gally also ignores transits, while George Myers has one!

Thank you guys for all your input. I'm going to order George's book and a couple of the notes. Thanks too for the link to Jock Fugitt's site! I printed it al so I can really study it.

Hi Keith,

Along with NFPA 1192, since you have asked specifically for information about electrical systems, you may want to acquire a copy of NFPA 70, as well.

The "written to be understood" version, as you call it, of NFPA 70 is called the "User's Guide to the National Electrical Code" and explains the basics of the NEC.

Like the others, I believe that there are very few journals out there that are well worth the money, but if you obtained everything in print, studied the bulletin boards and subscribed to a couple of magazines including The Coach-Builder's Bulletin and Bus Coversions, I don't think you can spend more than a few hundred dollars.

If even the most lame book focusses on a particular problem you have now or in the future, that little iota of information could save you thousands of dollars. Would even the most expensive conversion library not be worth every penny in retrospect?

By the way, NFPA 1192 2002 Edition is $26.75, NFPA 70 NEC 2002 softbound Edition is $59.50, the NEC Handbook 2002 Edition is $103.50, the User's Guide to the NEC is $49.50. Together, NFPA 70 & the NEC Handbook is $138.50.

The NFPA is at www.nfpa.org and NEC is at www.nfpa.org/nec.
