These were usually installed in Minesweepers , to keep the iron content of the boat down. Don't know who else would need them. FAST FRED |

Bob, Check out http://yp671.tripod.com and look for the Mantra YP-671. My understanding is that she has four 671's paired through a dual engine trans to each of two output shafts. Since the YP class was built as mine sweepers, wood hull, they would have the alum block, maybe? At any rate, they may have info on replacement parts from other decommissioned YP's of that class. The YP I serve with has twin 12V71's. Now you and Fred have my curiosity up as to whether they are alum block. FWIW Steve G. |

I served on a YP with the 4 671's and I'm almost certain that they were iron block. The YP's were originally built as midshipmen trainers and their minesweeping careers came later in their lives. I know that the one I served on had the original engines when it was transferred from Annapolis to the reserve fleet so I doubt that they were aluminum blocks. I'm am certain that the purpose built 'sweeps had aluminum block engines but those boats have long since been retired. |

Many LST used the same engine & tranny setup , @ 6-71 hooked to a single tranny with a Disconect for a dead engine. At times they come up on the surplus market . About $6000 will buy everything as one package , all Gov spec rebuilt. Not bad for 2 good running 6-71's but they spin truckwards , not GM. FAST FRED |

I knew they made an aluminum block for the 6V53, but did not know they (Detroit) made aluminum blocks for the 671. Very cool and your tax dollars at work, which we can now gleen. Thanks. |

Hey Steve That's a cool web site never heard of that outfit before. Leaving tomorrow for a Bus Nut rally. When I get back will check it out. I would love to build a 671 with an aluminum block Sure would be a conversation piece at the rallys, not to mention being much lighter. |
