Where can I find a used/rebuilt running 8v71 engine asap? I'm from ND and can't seem to find anything online. Also, where can I find some good info. online about removing and installing the engine as smooth as possible? |

I'm in ND. I've got a '78 MCI MC8 with the DD 8v71. It lost oil pressure and was towed to town. The next morning it would not even turn over. I don't mind having something shipped as i'm used to that but need to make sure it's coming from someone reptuable. |

Pulling the engine could not be any easier than on the MC-8. The engine sits in a big cradle which in turn sits on top of the frame rails. There are some long U-joints holding them together. Unhook everything from the engine and slide the cradle out the back. It might be easiest to bring the trans out too. Someone with more knowledge will be along soon. Are you at home or in some strange town? |

It's at home! Awesome, that looked like all it would take plus removing rear bumper etc. What do you guys use to lift/pull these heavy engines? I've pulled my stock car engine plenty of times but want to make sure I have the right eqp. for something so large. Thanks |

Nick, I just finished doing an engine swap in our MC-8. Here is a link to my engine swap photo album on PhotoBucket. Hope these photos help. I have an 8V71 that I took out of our coach that is complete except for bellhousing/back cover and the accessories that bolt to the bell housing/back cover. I am located in Southwest Florida. Nick As you are new to this thing make sure you don't go under the bus without blocking it. If an air bag blows you will get crushed as there isn't enough room for you underneath the bus. Put a 4x4 between the axle and the frame on each side where the rubber bump stops are to hold up the body. Safety first. To remove the engine build a cradle out of wood or metal hold the engine. Disconnect everything and roll the bus ahead with a large wheel wrench. Easiest way without a one armed hoist. Remember it weighs in excess of 4000 lbs. |

Nick, I'm in Winnipeg. Have a good 8V71 that you can see and hear run if you like. It was rebuilt just prior to my purchasing it. I can also help get it out and to North Dakota if required. Call me at 204 782 9672 or email your phone number. Thanks, Roy |

Nick, If you're still looking, I have a running 8V71 in my 83 MC-9 conversion. I want to share driving with my wife and older children and the 5-speed manual Fuller in my coach is too much for them right now. So... my diesel mechanic recommends one of these transmissions that shifts for you after you get it going. (Can you tell I'm not an expert here But the new tranny won't mate with the 8V71, so it also requires an engine swap. I'm in Burkesville, KY if you're interested... go to www.lindsey-family.com for contact info |

Will a motor out of a cabover fire/utility truck work in a bus? |

Nick, I assume you mean another 8V71? It will work in YOUR bus. Just look closely at the auxiliary drive connections. A "puller" instead of a "pusher" will have a different fan drive, etc. The block should be the same, so just a changeover of all of your parts. A BIG thing to watch out for is the bell housing, depending upon which transmission yours has, and what is in the fire truck. HTH, G |

MY bus is nearly finished 8-71 fire truck engine install, oil pan change, oil pump pickup, bellhousing not changed, but starter sits lower. Front mount(rear of bus) change, water pump is r/r cause to change mount, change. Compressor can stay at regular, power steering pump goes to old truck alt. drive. You loose the regular alt. drive, but I will drive/relocate my alt to a/c area. Use a flex pipe to muffler, and I will use a air cleaner on the r/s of the bus. IF you go to change the engine/water trans/oil cooler when changeing from old to fire truck engine special NOTE there is a bolt under/hidden under a gasket, if you do not remove the bolt you brake the plate$$$$$. If your fire turck engne has a auto trans. cooler wonderfull. I am useing a air trans cooler. The shop I am useing does this alot, and I do not have the heavy lifting stuff. Check my profile if you need answers. |
