There have been discussions about adding an expansion tank to a hot water, Webasto type heating system.

Consider the following. It may not be necessary depending on your system design.

This will work if you install 3 ball valves to connect/bypass your engine and you do not use a heat exchanger. When you are circulating through the engine, you are using the engine expansion tank.

When you want to bypass the engine, open the bypass valve and only 1 of the other valves. In this way, you prevent circulation through the engine and still allow the use of the engine expansion tank to be used.

That's what I've done for 10yrs. It only takes 2 valves. The circuit kind of looks like a figure 8, with the engine on one side and the webasto on the other. The heat coils are downstream of the Webasto so they get the hottest water. When heating the engine the center is blocked by a valve and a valve is open on the supply of water from the engine. When not heating the engine the center valve is open and the engine supply valve is blocked. This allows the engine cooling system to always act as the expansion tank.
